I've invested a lot of money in domains, services, my VPS's, tools, etc. I've been doing this stuff for the last 3 years (only started the SEO part a month ago) and so far I've gotten $121 from Google Adsense. I've probably spent over $1k. How long does it take you guys to make a return on the cost of domain, hosting and SEO?

Typically about 3 months out the gate, but I market straight from launch. If you let the site sit there and didn't do any marketing until you started SEO a month ago, you shouldn't really expect to see returns until a few months down the road (and that is only if you have an SEO that actually knows what he is doing - about 1/100 actually do). Just keep the SEO going and jump on the SEO a little sooner next time (or PPC, w/e your poison).

Also, lose the Adsense, every since the Plenty Of Fish incident, that system is far too regulated to make any sort of real money.

I don't know any other way to monetize for most of my sites. For some of them I know some good affiliate programs. Would selling banners outright help?

It all depends, each person has different experiences and paths that they take to make money online. Its all about learning what works, and then scaling that. For some people they find something right away, and for others it takes much much longer.

Unfortunately this is very subjective. Even if you continue to fail keep with it. That's what internet marketing is all about. Failing, failing, failing some more and then finally succeeding.

yes, selling your ad space banners on your site should be the most profitable way to make money from your web site by far because you can make up your own prices. charge as much money as you want and just use "law of averages" to find your advertisers. i say give it a shot man! :)

Thanks man, I'm trying to sell on DP. I have a forum with 400+ uniques so I think I can sell spots for quite some price.
Yeah I gave up a few times but always ended up putting all my sites backups back up and starting again. Though if I would have quit then I'd have more money now, who knows, I could have missed over $100 a day opportunity.

You need to find an affiliate who pays well, with most relevant ads to your niche.

    good luck,

If your income mainly come from adsense, it may take you anywhere from 2 weeks to months depending on how competitive your keywords are from my experience.

The only thing that worries me is I've been making sites with Adsense in the last 3 years and was not successful. Is a number 1 for a xxx,xxx term even going to get activity on my forums and revenue from Adsense?
