How is this possible in Ahrefs

So I am looking at my 2 top competitors for a niche, and I wanted to copy what links they have because they are #1 and #2 in google.

So I go to ahrefs.... and it says they have 3 backlinks!!! How the F is this possible, how are they outranking me? Am I missing something? They have a DA of 13 and I have 35.
I dont have a manual action.

Yes as above, there was a chap on here yesterday saying he makes a couple of blog comments then blocks the rest from backlink cheakers
 
They may have cloked the links out for some crawlers.
 
It could also be that they genuinely do only have a few backlinks, and in time you will rank better than them. You just have to give Google some time to rearrange the rankings. However, it could also be that your site is penalized.
 
Ah yes, I forgot you can block ahrefs and all that, it must be that. Smart bastards! I'll try googling their URL maybe some stuff will show up. Ive been in this niche for over a year and used to be #1 but got lazy, so its not a matter of they rank #1 for 4 backlinks.
 
Hey OP,

As others have mentioned already, most likely they have blocked bots like majestic, ahrefs and the main backlink checkers from crawling their site and they could also be using 301's and url shortners as well.
