I have few questions regarding how something is done. I enter the zip code of my town ( for example - Westby) at weatherdotcom and on the right of the page it says "Sponsored links in Westby" and underneath two ads:

    Code:
    "Acai Berry EXPOSED: Westby

Westby Warning: Health Reporter Discovers The Shocking Truth!"

    and

"Westby: Mom Discovers $3 Whitening Trick

Dentists Do NOT Want You To Know About This Teeth Whitening Secret!"
    When you visit these pages:

    Code:
    channel6reports*c*m/health/?n=200&k=weather
    Code:
    consumersdigestweekly*c*m/?n=201
The first one shows a weather map of the state where Westby is, and the second one has the same map but also at the beginning it says: "Amy, a Westby school teacher..."

    My questions are:
How are the ads made so that it shows the city you are in, and it spells it in the ad itself.

How the sites find your location and change the text of their content ("Amy, a Westby school teacher..."). If you use proxy, it will spell the name of the town the proxy is from. What scripts or ways they use?

Where can you find these templates they use? I have seen them on many different sites simillar to those ones.

If you know anything else, please add it.
    Thanks!

You mean to tell me you've never heard of GEO Targeted ads?
    You answered your question yourself:
So basically the site uses the referrer's IP address to get the Location. There are databases out there with this information.

I have heard of Geo targeted ads. But this is where you chose the location where your ads are to be shown right? Cuz I dont think the guy who sets up this ad enters each city in the US on each ad manually. There must be a faster way, and I am wondering what it is.
Also do you know where I can find these databases?

Search google for a geo-ip database, it'll associate ip numbers with geo locations.

Then using a simple php script, pull the visitors IP address, associate it with a location in your geo-ip database, and spit back out relevant information (such as city and state, zip code, etc.)

This happens a lot, they just check it with your IP. A lot of dating sites also use this "Find girl from <enter your city> right here!" stuff like that. No they do not enter it for every city.

I have a script I can provide to you that automatically populates the City based on the provided IP address, but as a newbie I'm limited to what I can post. I tried to post it but was disallowed.

I'll get it posted once I get additional posting privileges.

    More to follow.

    Good luck.
