I have a blog in german. I realize that the traffic for my niche may be too small in german though... or rather, i realized my buyers tend to read the info in english. Question: how would google view my blog if i started to add english language posts? would i get penalized since the declared language is german?

One SEO expert i talked with seemed pretty confident that it would actually be seen as a huge bonus by google. i'm sceptical. which is why i'm asking for a second opinion here.

    Any input from you guys?

    Thanks in advance!

You should create a separate subdomain, or separate domain, for other languages.

Search engines have difficulty choosing languages PER PAGE, so they go ahead and tag a whole section of your site as in language X and then you'll never rank for language Y.

Notice how most large sites have something like www.example.com for the native language and de.example.com for German and so on.

Is it a wordpress site? Then use the multisite function! That should work.

English should be the default for all sites.

Thanks for the responses! TSince the SEO expert I mentioned makes some good cash, i wanted to explore the idea a bit more, but my own take on it was also that it would hurt my ranking. OR at the very least, the old articles remain as they are, but the new ones would not get a good ranking, thus wasted work.

before i set up a subdomain, i would probably also need an extension for wordpress that would take care of the automatic language settings from the browser for me.

any recommendations for a plug in?

Thanks for the hint. I take it the multisite function is located in a standard wordpress package? i'll start searching for that.

Beware the multisite plugin. A company I ended up working for used it for a tourism-related site, they translated the thing into 20 languages but later when they wanted to redesign they couldn't get out of the plugin anymore because it changes the database structure in a way that your site is major clusterfuck without it.

Wow good to know! Never thought about going back from multisite to "standard"... but couldn't they just deactivate the other sites and keep the main one running? It's basically just one page then isn't it?

Having more languages on a blog is a huge bonus
    apart from having more content
you will also have a lot more keywords

You eill actualy get long tail keyword traffic from other languages without even doing any seo
    on that language
