    More links pointing to domain.com?

If I were to buy this domain I should keep it as domain.com since that has more PR, right?

Not necessary, you can modify the .htaccess file to 301 redirect domain.com to www.domain.com and you'll not lose the PR or the backlinks juice.
Make sure that the PR is not fake before buying it.
    Good luck!

Well rankchecker says it's valid. Is there another way I should check?

Make sure there are no fishy redirects.

Also check the backlinks ro make sure PR is warranted.

But yes, unless the www. is 301'd to the non .www the two are seen as separate entities in google. Using 301 to one or the other and then building links to just that property is a key component of good onPage SEO.

I just use WordPress and let it autoredirect www to non-www (or vice versa depending on how I want to do it). Is that ok?

This is a nice domain to buy. Previous owner or current owner have problems with duplicate content as the website obviously responds with both www. and without, which is 2 different "websites" according to Google crawlers. So if you buy this domain just 301 www. to without or without to www. - This is standard in WP install though.

The only way to be 100% sure the PR is not fake, is by checking the backlinks trough tools like MajesticSEO, Ahfres, SiteExplorer etc.

So the presence of many backlinks and/or high quality backlinks would suggest that it's valid PR, right? Compared with no backlinks (I see some sites with high PR for sale that have no backlinks) or a bunch of crappy links?

In fact www. is just a convention accepted to be resolving on port 80. Now everyone even web servers are doing the redirect TLD domain on www. subdomain. new.example.com might have different domain as well :)

Yes that's fine. In this case Wordpress will do the work for you.
