How important is a URLs structure?

I have a competitor that outranks me for a few important keywords.

My competitor has similar articles to mine but his URL is much cleaner. I believe it is part of the reason he ranks higher than me.

    My urls - mysite.com/health-education/lose-weight/
    His urls - hissite.com/lose-weight/

My girlfriend says it is a very small factor and I should not wast time changing it.

I am sitting on the fence. I think it may play a big role. So I am considering dropping the category slug (/health-education) from all my articles.

    What do you think?

It does have an impact, but both ways.

With an immediate page after, google views that as more relevant for that/those keywords. So yes, they would be out ranking you in that factor. However, if someone searches for the page slug + part of the category slug, then you're outranking them for that factor. Though the ideal is website.com/page-slug and website.com/category-slug
Worth changing? Maybe if your site is brand new. If its old, probably not.

Thanks man. What about new articles? Any new articles I write would be better without the slug right?

I for one do not think it matters. Google care about links not keywords in urls after all lots of sites got hit with keyword domains lately.

google can see this in various ways
My urls - mysite.com/health-education/lose-weight/ (this site has a category and supportive pages big plus)
His urls - hissite.com/lose-weight/ (this site only has one page no category big negative)

    Hello,

url structure is part of onsite seo so it does have a thing to say when it comes down to it ...you should look at this like a house....you cant build a roof if you dont have the fundation.
Now back to your problem....i dont think that this is actually the reason he is outranking you. I am pretty sure that he prolly has better article seo then you.

    Just my 2 cents.:)

If you're not ranking at all that is when this will be a problem but if you can be found in the top 50 and have been sitting there for a while, then you problem could just be better and stronger back links.

It's not a big enough difference to go back and change everything now, and I wouldn't try to solve it that way. Instead, as others have said, I would focus on putting up new articles with more SEO juice and getting as many backlinks out there as you can. Going forward, I would have new articles under a cleaner URL, but you're benefitting from hits for "health education" and "lose weight" on the existing ones so if you changed that you're going to lose more than you gain.

Not does'nt effect much now......you should try to build more high authority backlinks to get some immediate improvements

link structure doesnt have that much impact. as long as ur internal linking is strong and your off-site backlinking is strong to all the pages u want to rank, you'll be fine. Google won't get confused :)

there is only one way to find out..... change the url and do redirect from the old to the new url so you dont loose the backlinks. also, i suggest to stop building backlinks for that url, to find out if the url structure really makes difference.
