How important is the text surrounding a back link?

As the title says, anchor text is important of course, but so is the context of the back link. Just wondering how important the surrounding text is and if that is also used as a ranking factor - ie if you have 1000 links and each one had your target keyword in the surrounding text but NOT in the link text would it help to rank your site?

That's a good question. I know that one way to help images rank in Google Images is to include the keyword in the surrounding text (before or after the image) along with adding the keyword in the title, alt text, and file name. Knowing that they do this with images, it's not at all unreasonable to think that Google employs a similar factor with backlinks.

However, don't accept any of this as a definitive answer as it's all just speculation.

I usually stick my keywords in next to/around generic anchor text when I use it. Haven't done any testing of this specific method though, so I have no evidence of its efficacy.

Thanks, yea I think its possible. Not so long ago I was doing some work for a big site and they were very specific about words and phrases that should be mentioned within an article (But not longtail/LSI keywords, just related terms etc) so I think there is definitely weight in the text that surrounds links.

When I have more time I would like to test out the theory - I guess it could be done with 3 web 2.0 properties - build some backlinks to each one - one with 5% direct anchor, one with brand only and one with brand and also exact keyword mentioned near to each link......

Likely there won't be much in it but it would be interesting to see the results.

Are you going to post the results here on Black Hat World? I would personally be interested in seeing them. :)

It's very important. if you see anchor links from adobe, all would say something like "click here" and if you google this word, adobe website will show up!!! So, instead of wrapping your links like "click here, visit, now, website" use actual keyword and it would help a lot. even in ranking your website!!!! :D

Yes, but it's not always the case. I'm working on a niche at the moment, very competitive and yet none of the top ten for keyword I am targeting have any back links (or hardly any) with the keyword as anchor. So I think different rules apply depending on the niche.

Anyway, I will post here if I test theory. I have some Web 2.0 being created for another project so I may try it out on them.....

What was the setup? And did it produce any results at all in favour of this theory?

Setup? Less than 15 home page links on sites that have nothing to do with niche. Producing results for last 12 months.

Yea I'm not saying that it doesn't work that way, just wondering if you could also rank a site with keyword in text surrounding the link.... I thought you meant that you had tested that way...?

Thats like secret sauce. We know links are 95%....this (surrounding text) is probably in those 5% together with 1000 other things, so totally whatever
