Let's say I have an EMD site with 1000 words on it and well optimized. The competitors have the keyword in title and some have it in description but that's it. Their PR are 4, mine is 0. Is the PR important factor at all while trying to outrank them with minimum amount of backlinks.

I ask this because I have a site with PR 4, it has no competition for the exact keyword and it is not ranking in the first 100 results. I also have a site with PR 0 and it is on the second spot in G in the middle of sites with PR 4.

It seams to me that high PR doesn't actually have any advantages in giving the page a higher ranking. What are your thoughts?

When I am looking at the competition for my keyword selections, PR is more of a secondary factor in determining whether or not I will go after a keyword.

High PR just means the site has some good links to it, however ranking is about relevance. Competition with high PR pages should not deter you from going after a keyword. A PR0 can outrank a PR5 if the page is more relevant to the search query with some decent targeted linkbuilding.

High PR of your site isn't everything. If you had some keywords linking to external high PR sites, then you will probably show up in the SERP... Here is a better explanation:

PageRank does not correlate that strongly to search engine results placement, just because you have a high PageRank it doesn't automatically guarantee you a high placement on Google. And if you also rank really well, it also doesn't guarantee you a high PageRank.

So while it's true that PageRank played a huge role in Google's ranking algorithm in the past, its role today clearly isn't as important in terms of rankings, due in large part to the fact that plenty of other ranking factors have been introduced since the launch of PageRank. As more ranking factors are introduced, their relative weight must get smaller, as each represents a smaller percentage of a site's total score.

I think it's still better to build your links on high PR guest posts and even social networking sites... It gives you much more credential and Google likes it when a site has a lot more of positive likes and replies coming from social networking sites.

    Good luck ;)

You are absolutely correct in this one. PR have no influence on ranking what so ever. However, the age of the page still has quite a power. Naturally, older sites (especially more than 3 years old) have higher PR - and rank well. Therefor many people wrongly believe that high PR is better fro high ranking, while that's not truth at all.

Pagerank thing is tricky, sometimes it's useless and sometimes it's powerful. I wouldn't rely on it. If your competition has done a half-assed job with their onpage optimization then you got a winner. If you have a greater optimization given that you are not over-doing it then you can rank better than them with a few high quality links.

I have a new EMD site ranking #7 between several high PR sites, due to the great onpage optimization, and I haven't built a single link to it yet. I don't do keyword density bullcrap. Google is smart enough to determine the keywords you are trying to rank for.

Yep, exactly what this guy said. Just check out some of their backlinks, find out if they're using the same anchors you want to use.
