How important are they for SEO?

    For example:

    Shoes (with dropdown)
    -- For Men
    -- For women
    vs.

    Shoes for Men
    Shoes for Women

Well the nav should be silo'ed with the folders being something like site.com/shop/shoes/mens anyway so as long as you have it stacked right Google knows it came from shoes. So what the actual anchor says isn't as big of a deal since it should be navigating to a properly silo'ed sub-folder. That said for your personal organization for future remarketing, etc it may help to have it be more descriptive.

Nav link titles are important because they can affect conversions. Consider it as a means of communicating with your users/visitors. Drop down links are fine, Google still sees the links even on drop down menus. Just make sure everything is organized. Goal is to minimize the complexity when people navigate your site.

Check out how the big dogs are doing it. You can be sure they are doing it right. A wise man can learn more from his enemies than a fool from his friends.
