I'm in a bit of a dilemma now. I run a Bangkok expat website which you can find it here.

I would like to break into the Singapore market now and plan to launch an expat website in Singapore, similar to my Thailand expat website.

Unfortunately, the domain I wanted - singaporeexpats.com is taken and I've bought ads space from there before. It's ridiculous, they are charging $3,000 SGD for just a small banner on the right column. The Singapore market is extremely lucrative because of a high internet penetration in that overpopulated city, not to mention it's one of the richest countries in the world. For some strange reason, they also seem to have an inflated value on anything related to the internet.

I've just bought lioncityexpats.com and I'm thinking of getting singaporeexpatslife.com, to replicate my current business model in Thailand, but here's the dilemma.

Lioncityexpats sounds like a cool/awesome domain and its very brandable with the name Lion, as I always wanted to have a lion for a logo lol. For anyone who don't know, Lion City is kind of like a nick-name for Singapore. Singapore is known as the Lion City/Garden City/Little Red Dot etc. But, looking at how minimal work I've done for Bangkok Expat Life since I acquired the site, yet its growing decent traffic, I'm thinking that keywords in a domain is very important for SEO.

I'd like some insights and advice from BHwers whether I should go for lioncityexpats or singaporelifeexpats? I really like lioncityexpats but singaporelifeexpats seems much more relevant and better for SEO in the long run? Also could be easier for people to remember.

What would you do if you were in my position?

OP go for that lion thing, branding is more important. Adding Singapore in domain, not going to help you much.

OP LionCity is definitely good in terms of branding and as you mentioned goes with the unique identity of Singapore. Here are a few other options that I have found:
    • Singapuraexpats.com - Singapura (taken from Wikipedia while reading for Singapore ;))
    • SGexpats.com
    • SGlifeexpats.com

you really did some homework there. SG is a pretty good alternative to Singapore, looks cleaner too.
    not really recommend Singapura though

Well yeah that's the whole dilemma. I've been doing quite a bit of research on this before I posted this thread and the general consensus is that domain keywords are not that important as content is king, and according to Google, keywords in a domain will not be given preferential treatment ahead of domains with no keywords, but I still believe it plays a part in getting your website ranked, as I've seen it with my own website. The content on my website is pure shit, I've never spent a single dollar on Google AdWords or any kind of marketing/advertising campaigns yet I get pretty decent traffic, and a number of good keywords ranked on the first page. I think what I'd do is to build up lioncityexpats as my main site and singaporexpatslife as a PBN to link to that site.

I'm not really a fan of such domains but thanks for the suggestion, I might get this as a PBN.

Thanks mate, I've decided to go for the lioncityexpats domain, its much more brandable and gives a unique edge to my business.

Yes I thought its pretty creative and catchy. Thanks. ;)

Funny you mentioned that as I have thought of the 2nd and 3rd domain but personally, I never like the keyword SG as it sort of cheapens my brand. SG sounds too localized and a lot of local companies in Singapore like to use SG as part of their website and marketing campaigns, not to mention the govt love using this SG keyword for any national events. I'm trying to build an expat website so I can't go with this keyword as it's targeted to an international audience. I will get sgexpats.com as a PBN though. It's short and catchy.

Singapuruexpats.com will work well if you are targeting Muslim countries like Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei but my audience are English speaking. Thanks for the research pal, appreciate it. I will go with LionCity. :)

Adding your keywords in your domain do not work these days in Google (not sure about future updates). What matters is the backlinks to your website.

Instead, go for a solid brand name.

    Cheers,
    Steve

I would prefer singaporelifeexpats as kw still important for better SE marketing. I'm telling this from my experience however you may find so many lengthy articles and advice about forgetting kw in domain, put brand first etc. etc. You may put that lion city thing in your web design, theme or logo to keep your branding preference alive. Just my 2 cents :)

Large scale studies conducted as recently as mid/late 2016 showed that their was a STRONG correlation with having the main keyword in your domain for ranking #1. However, for all other positions on page #1 of Google, it made no difference.

Also, that #1 ranking was always a high quality authority site...not some slim site that got a big boost from having the keyword in the domain name...so take that for what you will.

I would recommend the best for branding the site. Keyword in the domain name doesn't do much these days.

EMD or keywords do give a boost but its small, there was a emd update a while back that lowered the value of these.

Personally i find it nice to have a bit of the main topical keyword somewhere in the name like a soccer review site... soccerfanatics.com etc...
