How important are h1 h2 h3 h4 tags? I don't bother using them since it's a pain to have to go through every article and add them in. Is it worth doing? Are the seo results from doing this noticeable?

It is proper structure to use those tags for highlighting important information like, main title, paragraph title and so on, help to search engine to digest correctly content as well.
But now when google understand css and javascript it can recognize text that you emphasize on the page even without those tags so you should not be missing much if you don't use them. But those tags are still correct and prefered way to structure your document.

I understand that they should make your articles rank better however I've heard if done incorrectly they can cause more harm than good.

I think your right on this one. The same thing goes for bold, italics and underlined text. If the few instances of your keyword are all in h1-5, bold and italicized text then it probably isn't a good thing.

Most CMS nowadays will handle the H1 for you automatically so it isn't really an issue. If you add the keyword in h1, h2, h3, bolded and italicized then it sure looks spam my even though you've only mentioned it 5 times.

You can use them but in my experience they don't have much influence on rankings. I just use he tags.

I've noticed that wordpress has been doing it automatically. I checked out my site on woorank and it says that the keywords are consistent and that I use h1-h2 tags. I wont manually add them because I guess they're not worth the risk for me.

If they are used for the purposes of making your content more user friendly then, yes, they should be included. If they are used to emphasize keywords for onsite optimization, then it will probably hurt you.

as long as I learn SEO from my SEO teacher, it's important for SEO on Page.. I can't explain the reason, (still newbie). but, in my experience, for my local sites (non english site), I just focus on quality articles and SEO on Page with proper H1, H2, etc tags structures, for keywords with low competition, now they can rank in first page.. (without any backlink). I just give high quality BL for my homepages at this moment.. of course I will give those posts backlinks too to make them stronger and always on first page.. :D

If you believe on-page is important then yes, headline tags are super important as well. I don't like shooting myself in the foot, so I make sure to have the proper page structure on our sites. It makes sense not only SEO-wise, but also makes designing the page a lot easier.

    Home Page:
Besides being important formatting elements, headings may have some influence on your rankings. Although they won't make your site rankings jump, these elements can make your website more search-engine-friendly.

Use <h1> tag once per page and include your keywords here. Subsequent headings, <h2> to <h6> are used to highlight the navigational structure and may include variations of the keywords used in the <h1> tag. All that will help search engines to identify what your landing page and its parts are about.

And note, that meta descriptions are also useful because they often dictate how your pages are shown in search results.
