This is an extension of a reply I posted to another thread.

Ill let you in on a story of mine, when I was 17 untill 21 I started selling jet skis on ebay, I would get them for cheap from CL and other classifieds and make SERIOUS bank for a 17 year old, at my peak I had 20 jet skis in my parents garage, backyard and front yard, making no less than $500 on each one and they sold fast during the summer. At times I had a number of people contact me through eBay to find a jet ski for them as my feedback got better, that was quick money. Best sale was when I got a jet ski for $800 sold it for $2500 the next day! $1700 for MAYBE an hour of work. Was hanging around in Vegas casinos and strip clubs every weekend.

What does it have to do with BH, I dont know...be creative, it does involve promoting online after all.

This is a seasonal niche, depends on which hemisphere your one but if summer is coming your way in the next couple of months, now is the time.

    - Get $200 - 300 to start with

    - Go into craigslist and other local classifieds in your area and look for jet skis ranging in year of production from 1984 to 1995 ish (rarely had success with anything older or newer because its either too much of a piece of crap or the profit margin isn't worth it.)

    What worked for me

    - Models to look for:

Kawasaki stand up jet skis, any model from 1984 to 1993 (440,550,650)
Seadoo 2 seaters ( from 1989-1995) *good profit margin
    Yamaha stand up jets skis ( 1990 - 1994 )

Number 1 Rule (VERY IMPORTANT): Make sure they look clean like someone's grandma used it twice in 20 years, if they are clean, thats a guaranteed quick sale for good profit.

thoese are models I made the real moneny from, but as you get into it, you would know what a good deal is when you see it.

    What to stay away from:

    - If its beat up, no matter how cheap, forget it.
    - Kawasaki made a hybrid between stand up and sit down jet skis from around 1989 to 1993, dont ever buy it, people advertise them for $1000 but they NEVER sell for that (trust me on this)

I cant emphasize enough how important it is for a ski to look "clean" that also means that its stock, no "pimped out" jet skis.

    Another Key Fact:

People will advertise jet skis as non working and sell cheap, I guarantee you that 80% of the time the ski will start with a new battery and some fuel, easy money again;)

Do some research to get a feel for your local area, I only advertised on eBay and craigslist but Im sure others will have their sources.

Good luck to anyone who peruses this, it may or may not work depending where you live but its definitely worth a try.

Why Im sharing this? Ive gained allot from BHW so giving a little back, also Im in a whole different industry now so hack at it ;p

As far as the auction went, I would start them at a price usually about $100 more than I paid and let it run.

Dont know where you are located but I did this in L.A, so check your market before you invest, I highly recommend you stick to the models I listed on the thread, at least for the start.

Reason I stopped was I started slipping into a different buisness untill it just became my full time job, simply a more steady income.

bottom line, if I need to make a quick $300 - $500 right now, I know that would be easy, just find some good deal on a ski and sell it.

The trick as to why this works is simply because there are too many poeple out there who dont know what they're selling or buying when it comes to this particular niche.

During the winter I would have bought a few skis here and there if I found some crazy good deals but waited for the summer to sell them, its just too slow in the winter. I would normally start in march until around august.

I bought a bunch of $0.01 for my feedback at the beginning, 40 of em. As far as shipping goes, usually people would pick it up, I had someone drive 1000 miles one time, I also shipped a few through FedEx freight, maybe 20 of them not a whole lot, you gotta build a create for them and have FedEx come pick it up. People would sometimes pay as much for the shipping as they did for the ski it self, that was usually when I shipped out of the US.

If everyone starts doing this then the Craigslist to Ebay profit margin will start to shrink. I did this once with SD cards when they first came out - bought them on Ebay and sold them on ebay - this was actually before Ebay started protecting poorly advertised auctions like bad titles, bad ending times...I made about 30 bucks on each card until the technology got way too common.

Your profit margins depend on craigslist prices, and sooner or later those prices will start to rise to meet ebays, and you'll have to find another product.

Great post. This method works with many items. Pick something you know a little bit about and run with it. Seasonal item are great. You can typically steal them in the off season and double or triple your investment in season.

In all honesty I dont see how its the same, SD cards have nothing to do with jet skis. Jet skis is a completely different niche, CL or other classifieds ads will NEVER EVER have the same price as on eBay due to the simple fact that people simply dont know what they are selling and when it comes to these particular skis they just assume they have a worthless piece of crap laying around, Ive seen it way too many times. Another reason I like it is because your not competing against 100000000000 people online but maybe a few local people, trust me this little niche isn't over yet
