How I grabbed over 5000 page views in 24 hours

Site was registered late in the day on March 21 2012. After setting everything up it was ready to go live just before midnight.

Keep in mind that this probably worked well because of a few things:
    1) It was in the news nationally
    2) For me it was a big topic locally so it was easily pushed through to my social media contacts in Facebook

One bad thing was that I did not monetize it immediately (Stupid me!). I did not think I would grab 5000 page views in the first 24 hours. But it is now monetized with adsense.

A little background: on March 21, 2012 Roger Goodell handed down a 1 year suspension to New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton for the Bounty Program Scandal. I'm from New Orleans so this is a big deal to football fans down here. Later that day I registered "boycottsuperbowl47.com". The Super Bowl is being held in New Orleans in 2013.

I installed Wordpress with Heatmap theme and the following plugins. cbnet ping optimizer, contact form 7, easy privacy policy, yoast wordpress seo and SpeakUP Email Petitions.

I wrote an approximate 700 word article for the front page. I then wrote the petition (a little over 300 words) and set it up in SpeakUP Email Petitions plugin. I used pages for the site and not post. So at that point I had the 700 word front page, a contact us page, the privacy policy page, the petition page and a page that shows the petition signatures.

I then stayed up until 2 am posting the link to the petition on my friends Facebook profiles. Now keep in mind that I didn't just share it on my profile. I actually went to about 100 people on my Facebook friends list and actually posted the link to their profile and said "Hey sign the petition and make sure you share this site."

Well, low and behold, apparently they did. Here are some of the stats from wordpress jetpack for a 24 hour period on March 22, 2012

    Pageviews: 5,029
    Facebook referrers: 3,423
    Search Engines: 54 (Google - 39, Bing - 8, Yahoo - 7)

Main Page has 359 Facebook Likes
Petition Page has over 2000 Facebook likes and 28 tweets

And as lagniappe I've collected over 1500 emails through the petition plugin.

Keep in mind that all of the Facebook likes and tweets were from real people. None of them were purchased.

Today I had someone at Iwriter, write a 700 page press release. I then sent the press release to all of my local news affiliates as well as natational news affiliates to see if any of them will pick up on it. I also paid for a couple of fiver gigs to have the press release added to some press release sites.

Like I said I was S.T.U.P.I.D not to have it monetized earlier but I did add adsense late last night.

I hope some of you can use this information for ideas for setting up some profitable campaigns.

I am in awe! That was quick thinking throwing your site up on a hot topic. You may have initially missed the traffic surge, but you can still profit from it and you have 1500 email addresses.

    Congrats!

The traffic is still coming (Almost 1000 page views already today), just not at as fast of a pace as it was yesterday.

The press release is doing it's job as I received an email from one of my local TV news stations wanting to do an interview with me. Unfortunately, my real job comes first (and I'm working 24 hours straight) so I had to turn down the interview. I did do a phone interview with her and hopefully the site will get mentioned.

I also got an email from another station's sports reporter telling me I should shut the site down. I'm writing a post on the site and including a quote from the email as well as a response to it. I will probably push that link on facebook again tonight and help drive some more traffic.

you gotta jump on those news interviews. that is what will get you coverage and traffic! don't turn them down, figure out a way to do it, even if it is just a phone interview.

gotta be ready for success. once one news station picks you up, others will want to also to look like they are "in the know" and your site could get even more!!!!! traffic!!!!

The hottest thing right now is Trayvon Martin. This is going to be going on for years.

What would you have done if you knew the future re: Rodney King in advance of the trial, riots, etc...

Even though I wasn't able to do an on-air interview I did speak to the reporter by phone. And I just saw the report and she did in fact show the site. It was a close up of the computer screen as she was scrolling down the site

Wow, nice! I'd love to monetize something like that. It's great that it got in the news, huge promotion right there!

Wow that is just awesome for you! I told myself I should do more research before I start posting like a dummy, but I'm moved by your post. I know there are a lot of ways to drive traffic, but envisioning the site at the opportune time and immediately going locally viral is genuinely great. I wanted to subscribe so I can remember your success when I finally approach the time frame I am attempting.
    How many visits now?

I missed my chance on getting one of my sites to appear on Fox 21 news channel, I wrote in telling them about my site and told them I needed there help to get the word out, the site was about various scams which I was investigating, mostly Nigerian.

The thing is I wasn't prepared for them to invite on there show to discuss these scams and my website and I couldn't persuade my wife to do it either lol

One suggestion, your adsense is not optimized, I would put one block of ads right after
    Petition Signatures Collected
    Right Here Put the AD

Hope you bank and proud you took initiative!!!

P.S See if you can add t-shirts from cafepress or some t-shirt company with sean payton etc.

No you can still profit from the email you have. Just make an email announcement about something, and get them to go to the homepage with your adsense on it :)

Are you already making money from your site? I just can't imagine people clicking on your ads, as they came to this site for another purpose.

Do you mind sharing some statistics? Would be nice! Good idea & fast implementation anyway.

Sorry that I haven't responded sooner but I haven't been on BHW in a while since I have been busy with what seems like a 1000 projects going on at one time.

Let me start off by saying what has been said here before. Get off your butt and do something. Build a site, build links, build another site and build some more links. If all you do is nothing, then all you will be successful at is "Doing nothing".

Since my last post I decided to start my own business. I filed for an LLC, opened a business checking account, had a logo designed and on Monday I will be going to look at some retail office space. It will be a website design and marketing company. For as large of a metropolitan area that I live in you would be surprised at how many businesses don't have an online presence.

Now to answer some of the questions.

Not a whole lot like $25 in the last week. But it's something and like I said earlier I missed out on the main traffic since I didn't add adsense until after the majority of those 5000 page views on the first day.

I wish I could have done a personal interview as well. Try to be prepared for anything. You just never know the amount of traffic that such an interview can bring.

I know it could be better optimized and I will probably work on it soon. I was looking at the site the other day saying I need to move this add here, this one there, etc.

As far as the t-shirts are concerned, one big one is "Free Sean Payton" t-shirts. I was thinking I need to write an article about the shirts and how popular they have become and monetize that way.

I have written a couple of more post when something hits the news (Payton asked Bill Parcells to coach the team and when it was announced that Paton was appealing the suspension). I have sent one follow up email to the petition signers with a link to one of the post and have also continued with facebook post, tweets, etc.

Ah but they have. You would be surprised what people click on if it catches their attention. And I don't agree that they won't click on adds because they came for another reason. The main reason they came was to sign the petition but if Google is serving relevant adds or if I'm putting relevant adds in front of them they may click and or buy something.

Most of the people that would come to the site would be New Orleans Saints Fans. So if google is serving an add block that say's "Get your Free Sean Payton T-shirt" Saints fans may be interested in that and click the link.

As far as the stats go, the traffic has died down to a trickle right now. But I knew it would. It was something current in the news. And like the saying goes, yesterdays news is old news.

1st day was 5029 page views
    2nd day - 931
    3rd day - 719
    4th day - 463
    5th day - 551

since then a trickle of traffic but a total of 8024 page views since I launched it on the 22nd of this month.

Now here is the kicker, in the beginning I was ranking on the first page (like 6th position) for the term super bowl 47. The problem is that nobody is searching for that term right now but they will be as it gets closer to superbowl time. However, it has dropped from the first page. But I'm going to work like hell to get it back there and come super bowl time I will monetize the site again with more information on hotels, tickets to the game, etc.

Well that is all. Good luck to all out there who are working their asses off like me :D

    OP,

I'm liking your method, and I"m going to adopt it. If/when I make some significant cash, you will be receiving a piece of it as a gratuity.

While reading your thread for the 4th time, I realized that all the WordPress work you did could be done in advance of the next event, and you could use the exact same set-up for multiple events. Whitney Houston dies, OJ is found Not Guilty, Zimmerman is arrested, etc...

All you need is a domain name and a hosting service, and you are live & running instantly because you've done all your up-front work in advance of the site being created. Adapt the text of the site to whatever event you are trying to monetize, set-up all the filepathnames and alt text to the keywords you are optimizing for, maybe have some high-PR, high traffic sites do a 301 redirect to the new money site maybe. Massive spam backlinks to put you on the 1st page. I think Google will forgive the spam when they see the bounce rate is low and the ad-sense revenue starts coming in.

OH. And. Have your relationship with your T-shirt Vendor, buttons, posters, whatever ready. And have back-ups of these on the chance that your primaries go flaky or (even better) response is so huge you need more than one to meet demand.

Here's what I'm thinking. Trayvon isn't going away. They are either going to arrest Zimmerman or they wont'. If they won't, "Arrest Zimmerman" is going to make money until the Presidential election. If they do, "Zimmerman is Guilty", "I am Zimmerman", "Zimmerman is Innocent" and "Free Zimmerman" are all going to make money until his trial, which will be in about 1 to 1 1/2 years.

Note this is just one event. They are going to find another celebrity dead in a bathtub, another upstanding member of society is going to murder someone, etc...

This sounds to me like it's ideal JV territory. A group of people with diverse talents ready to capitalize on sudden events ahead of everyone else.

Great job...Have you thought about switching out Adsense for another affiliate program for football gear? Obviously you know which fans are visiting your website, therefore you could likely setup some affiliate links to New Orleans gear, such as jerseys, game tickets, etc.

I'd even recommend doing some multi-variate testing to see which affiliate programs convert better. I guarantee you'll get a higher payout AND higher conversions as a result.
