I have done SEO for a good few years now making niche sites for a good passive income but a few months ago I thought to myself 'I really need to make a business out of this'. I have always been a people person. In my day job, I am a sales assistant for a well know UK store where I talk to the public all day long. Only problem is... I hate this job.

I am a firm believer in the fact that you only get one chance at life so be what you want to be so I will be damned if I spend the rest of my life working for people that I hate.

Now I could quit my job at any time and still live of the money I make online but I have a 1 year old son to look after. If the next update wipes out my sites, it would also wipe out my income. So I am keeping a day job as a sort of safety net until I have my own business as an SEO provider/firm (with each update, I could get more customers so im told).

So my first step into this little adventure is to get a job in a local SEO firm and see what goes on behind the scenes so I know what to expect, whilst keeping a day job.

So then how did I get this job? Hand in a CV? NO... Go down and talk to them? NO....

I thought I would take a unique approach that would showcase my skills and make them want me :D

What I did was create a new site that was basically an online CV advertising myself to SEO firms. I put some pics of me on there as well as links to a few of my more competitive niche sites that im ranking for including search details (there is nothing like a good portfolio :D)

I then ranked my new site number 1 for:

    [my city] SEO
    [my city] web design
    [my city] SEO firm
    plus other

By doing this I have outranked all the other seo firms in my town for all of there target kws

I also added a little message onto my site basically saying that I would like a job in a local seo firm..blah blah blah and politely hinted that I am better at this than them lol

A few days after ranking, I had a few emails off companies asking me to take down the site as it is affecting there business, but I had two job offers :p

After visiting both companies and having a chat I am now working for a firm with friendly people, doing what I love

Thanks for sharing. I've worked with local SEO as well and it's much more personal than working with some firm across the globe. I liked it, but got really tired of phone calls and having to be there all the time.

That's true. I've worked for others for many years, I left over 10 years ago and never looked back. I work more than most my frieds, have less time, but they have no idea how much fun I have while at work.

That's amazing man. I tried to get into a local SEO firm a few months ago and even said I would work for free so that I could get more experience. After a few emails back and forth, they stopped replying. Maybe your approach would work out better :D Congrats!

Glad to see your success, also make sure you give them a backlink from your site. They could even pay you for it, as that link would be worth quite a lot.

That really is great and another reminder to everyone out there that "If you are not happy about something then get off your arse and do something about it !"

Look at what is possible if you put a little effort into it.

    OP, thanks again. Inspiring.

Congrats man. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders and I am sure you'll be a success!

I guess my only advice would be to keep your eye on the prize. It is easy to lose focus when you work somewhere that you love.

Remember the goal is to build your own company not work for somebody else's!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I like it! But why take down your site? You could have put some kind of ad for the company you are with just as easily as taking it down. This way you can keep your site ranked, and if things don't work out you can use it for the next company (hopefully your own).

    Anyway, great job and congrats

    SEO, webdesign, SEO firms... !!!
if you can rank for such keywords why do not make your own small company with your own rules ?
why make money for someone else when you can take all the profit

Now thats out of the box thinking! I like it. I just went and interviewed at a local company where I trained most of their staff, they knew literally nothing of programming and most nothing of the net -- and got turned down. Turns out I am overqualified! LOL So congratulations on the job and my best wishes go with you -- I love to see folks succeed!
