From top to bottom is the top 10 position spots for the keyword and the bottom row is the average of those 10. Would it be hard to rank without tools in number 1 spot?

I'll leave it for someone else to answer your exact question. I just wanted to point out something important that your example shows.

The #1 result only has 145 backlinks counted, #2 has 14, and #3 has 34, and yet they are higher in the serp than the #4 result which has 3665 backlinks, and #7 which has 5989 backlinks. Also the #3 result even has a lower pr than the #4.

So what does that tell us? Well for starters having a higher quantity of backlinks isn't all it takes. The quality of your backlinks, as well as some other factors are more important than just blasting out massive amounts of irrelevant backlinks. Quanity over quality is NOT a gaurantee for success.

If you really concentrate on finding high quality relevant sites to get your backlinks from then you should be able to outrank most sites that just concentrate on quantity alone.

I would say the nich you're looking at has some potential. Apparently you can rank well with a fairly small number of extremely good backlinks and some really good on-site seo.

To answer your question specifically, the answer is NO, it will not be hard to rank without tools.

You can see that its the quality pages that are winning there. All you need is a good quality page that is better, and a few links, and you are good to go.

Most people generally agree that anything PR3 and below can be overtaken with relative ease.

    forget about PR.

you need quality links not only quantity, and also on page SEO.

anyway i dont see many links there, try some xrumer, scrapebox and senuke tools , combine them alltogether and you will reach the 1st position in weeks + good content!

It looks like that's what the bottom feeders in his results were doing.

I don't think blasting links is going to cut it.

    Game has changed.

I think you are right. To me it seems that the top 10 rankings OP showed in his image reflects the 'MayDay' issue.

Everything is changing right now. I would bet that the rankings were way different before 'MayDay.'

About links. So I have links built to my website (well thats what google webmaster tools tells me). I remember doing them but I was sort of guessing how I do it. Do I need to ping anything or what? Or just post the link and move on? Because I remember I posted more links than that and google didn't find all of them. Any help? Sorry about the newb question.

Where ever you posted the links, it's a good idea to ping those pages. Generally most sites will do this automatically (assuming these were blogs), but if you find them not showing up, you might want to try pinging them. Try not to do it all at once, but rather in sequence each day.

More going on here than meets the eye! The more I learn about SEO the more I realize I dont know.

Yeah, I agree with you Peter.

I think whats happening is that they're getting better at making algorithms to determine quality and relevance. Both for the websites themselves and also for the sites they backlink from. It's going to become more important to try making sites that at least appear to have some value.

At the end of the day though, its still just algorithms. It'll always be possible to work the system to get a lesser quality site to rank well. At least until they get AI perfected.

If the OP makes the site relevant to the topic he's targeting, makes it as good a site as he's capable of doing, and focuses on getting his backlinks from other relevant quality sites then he should be able to get a high position. That's always what google has been looking for, I think they're just getting better at identifying it.

It's because of the recent update with Google. It's all about quality relevance now, and less about links.
