Well I am trying to rank on a 30k monthly search result with my new wordpress site. The top leader has about 800 backlinks total. how hard is this going to be to rank? and what should I start doing first?

The difficulty depends on the strength of their links, and a lot of other things nowadays. For very difficult niches, I've seen new sites come up, stay for a while and drop for no reason for a while and then come back up. To be ranked stably, it might take a bit of time.

You should look at your competition's backlinks (Ahrefs), see how strong they are and that will tell you what you need to do. A combination of some strong backlinks — and if you have the budget, you can buy some aged domains and create a very small network of your own pointing to these sites with Google authorship and all with 3-4 articles each — with enough time will do it.
