I am wondering how hard is to outrank sites like amazon even with 0 backlinks to particular page (checked in majestic).

Could you share your experience? Any methods how can I do that?

amazon is big and well established. the auction niche itself is quite difficult to break into. the amount of trust you have to gain from visitors is more than usual for a site in order to profit.

It really depends. Sometimes if it's just an authority site not really optimized for that particular keyword, they're easy to beat. For example, one surgeon I work had the top site as an authority health directory that had no content on that page. It took all of 5 minutes to beat them.

If it's an authority site that's optimized for that page with a lot of backlinks, well you'd better know your SEO in and out.

It's usually very easy. Just check the PR and page links. If those are easy like any other site you are trying to outrank, then you can. Those pages are usually only up that high because they are a big domain, not because they have awesome on and off page SEO for that specific page.

It really depends on your skillset and techniques. You can certainly outrank authority sites, it just costs more. :(

Anyone can be beat...for the right price. It depends on how profitable the niche is as to whether it's worth it or not. Good luck!

Put it in opensiteexplorer.org and you can get a rough idea of the power it has.

Remember there's a difference between site/page. I smoke by amazon easily with barely any effort.

Yeah it's a good rough guide.
    47 is decent competitive.
High 60s and up are the harder niches.

It all depend the keywords, for example I outrank Amazon for a 10 K global search USA per month with a site that have pr 0 . Also, is is really important to contain the keywords in the url. It is a lot easier to rank that way . Simple find your niche. Of course If you want to rank they keyword " buy online " it will be imposible, but may be " buy cheap cars in north california state " will be a lot easier, specially if you have the " buy.............state.com " .
So past a lot of time searching for the right keyword and the right url .

Totally agree, that is why I dont look at PR of sites and age. If Amazon, home depot, overstock, etc.. are ranking in top 10, many people would think that this would be just impossible. Personally, I don't look at these sites in general from a competition standpoint.

Usually they are not optimizing for long tails. I doubt amazon is building links to the "red iron super cool golf club". Now, a top ten of a bunch of IMers building tons of back links to their pages, is something I stay clear of.

The big boys usually rank for main keywords naturally and yes, the big searched keywords are probably harder to rank for.

Phrase which I'm refering to has 14,8 k monthly searches in US (exact) and it is a product phrase. Whole 1 page except thin affiliate site is not optimized for keyword (except h1); they just have products, no content. First four competitors has no more than 10 backlinks to specyfic page.

    good choice?:)
