I found a nice keyword with 60k+ search/month, with almost exact match .com TLD still available, and the first 5 results on Google didn't have good on-page SEO.

The first google result is "a page" on "a very large site" - the page have 50 backlinks to it, but the site that the page is on have 10,000 backlinks to its index page.

Position #2-#5 have 0 backlink, and are all a single page on a larger site.

My question is, do I have to win 50 backlinks to get to first result, or do I have to win 10,000 backlinks on the domain to beat that particular page?

    Thanks for all inputs!

Thanks, I going to do that anyway.

But what I wanted to know is, do I have to get backlinks to fight the 50s or do I have to fight the 10,000s.

It should be pretty easy to beat. The one thing to look at is the quality of those links. Are those links all coming from high PR sites that google loves? Second how old is the domain? If its a really old domain that will be hard to trump. If you build higher quality links then your competitor you should be successful.

The domain is 6 years old, mine is just registered.

All their 50 backlinks are from blog and forum posts.

It seems I can beat them easy enough maybe?

Pay attention to the search count! Is it EXACT search count?

I think so, I just put the word without quote in adwords and it report that search volume. (I put in "dog meat" and google say "dog meat" have 60k monthly search)

The keyword are for somewhat obscure niche by the way.

always look for the "exact", which will look like this [yourkeyword], that has searches above 2500 monthly. Don't bother anything less than that. For your question whether you should look main domain's backlinks or that particular page backlink count, I was in similar situation. The keyword i was targeting was just like that. In that case, that particular page has 80 backlinks something and the main domain has 10s of thousand backlinks with PR 4. When I started building quality backlinks I out ranked that particular page and got on to spot 1, so in my humble opinion if you add some hundreds of quality backlink to the keyword u wanna target, u will definitely outrank that page. sorry for my english

Download seo spyglass and use them to analize the PR of the links..

Make a list and classify the links on: Blogs,Forums,Bookmarks etc..

And try to see if you can reproduce..

Just cause they only have 50 backlinks doesn't mean they are easy to beat. It is possible that they are receiving a 301 redirect from another site with a ton of backlinks, thus could be very deceptive.

Spam backlinks are shitty by definition, but 50 spam links to an authority domain is worth a lot more than 50 spam links to a new domain. It's impossible to judge competition if you don't really familiarize yourself with how the algorithm actually works. I recommend obsessively reading seomoz.
