I've heard really conflicting info, so looking for opinions of people who've tried to do this or done it.

as hard as it is to rank a .com, but from a human perspective, people are much more like to click on a .com than a .info IMO

Have done it, would do it again. Keep in mind a lot of the people who tend to use .infos also use cheap oversold shared hosting. This hosting commonly can have several dozens of domains on the same IP, so if another of those sites get a Google slap you can expect to feel the effects of it as well.

Just asked 2 friends that I'd consider average internet users this question:

"Do you have any views on .info domains rather than .com ones?"

    Their replys:

"I'd be more apt to trust stuff on .info"
"Yes. .info seem like it might me more reliable than a .com. "

Very small pole to be sure but it would be interesting if some of you asked around some of your friends as well to see their views. Would be interesting if the average internet user trusted .infos more than .coms.

Edit: After talking to them a bit more why they believe that, I found out that both of their schools very openly promote .info and .org sites to be more reputable than .coms.

For testing, .infos, because they're cheaper. but if you plan on having like, a long lasting brandable domain -- definitely stick with the .coms because it looks more trustworthy.

I find them easy to rank. No harder than a .com

Don't sweat it too much, if it is just a small site. Like others have said though if you are building a brand than buy the .com

Surprisingly, not that hard. Many people do well with them.

I had one .info ranked before the same domain that was a .com. Had a similar backlink count. I think you just need a well optimized site and build good backlinks and it will rank the same as any other domain name

    Thanks in advance.
