I have a very very nice health website, no products just information. It has great content and a great design. I havn't done any SEO on it but was getting ready to do so but have been getting discouraged after seeing the likes of webmd cdc and other reputable health sites taking up the first page in rankings. Should I start this endeavor or will it be a waste of time and money?

It does seem like it would be a pretty hard nut to crack. What you might want to do is check all the long tails you can think of and see if any of them would be easier to rank for and start there and then work up to the shorter main keywords. I would also think about starting with one area and then branching out to others.

This is probably one of those long term projects that you work on while you have some other money making projects bringing in your income. I have a couple of them that I have been working on for quite awhile, just slowly building up rankings and keywords even though I know there is not going to be any short term benefit.

I've given it a shot, and I'd say it's fairly difficult. I was able to hit the bottom of page 1 for a very competitive health term, but moving up farther than that was difficult. I was up against sites like WebMD. Then again, nothing is impossible. I just think it would be quite difficult.

Is it wordpress? if so, install the rank tracker plugin to see what you may already be ranking for. Then boost those pages with backlinks to get higher rankings. Keep checking and working your way up. There is plenty of room if you stick with it.

It all depends on the keywords. I've beaten those sites before pretty easily, but it was a niche keyword that did not yet have a lot of competition. It took me about 3 months and I did a lot of pure "marketing" type stuff, social signals, in addition to regular backlinking. I agree with volund, work on it while you work on other projects. Gonna build some Web 2.0's today for your other MNSs? Throw a few in for this site. Gonna run some backlinking campaigns today? Throw one in for this site. Gonna make some videos today? Make a couple for this site too. Etc. The payoff is worth it.

I've ranked some difficult terms, (100,000+ exact match) with about 3 months works. And it was soooo worth it. There is no substitute for smart work and patience.

Health niches are highly saturated hence to rank your site you need to gain the Google trust first.Try building quality back links and do target the lower competitive Keywords and with passage of time the higher and medium Keywords will also start ranking.

Maybe I'll bump this thread in a month or so and let you guys know of my progress. And for whoever recommended the plugin that tells you what your ranking for already, thank you, I've been looking for something like that!

The problem with going head to head against WebMD is that they have over one million indexed pages on their site. How many indexed pages do you have?

WebMD is an extreme example of an authority site.

I have a health/medical related site, but it is different from WebMD in that all my pages target the same keywords they are targeting but one extra keyword that they are not, so my site shows number one in all these searches. Without that extra keyword that I target, I don't show on the first page.

So if you are going to go head to head against WebMD, you better start adding a ridiculous volume of information or find that extra keyword (longtail) that you can rank for in front of them.

Yeah, if you are trying to rank for really generic health related keywords, then you need to build a huge authority site and this requires years of investment or millions of dollars to compete with WebMd, but if you take a generic health term and add extra keywords to it, then you are good to go...my site is in a very specific niche, but i beat WebMd every time in this niche b/c this added keyword is very specific to the software that i sell...think "lung cancer + keyword" and i beat them every time and i beat everyone else too...no competition, i have the upper hand in this niche...

the niche is small so don't think i am super smart or something, its just knowing my niche and knowing how to exploit it...

    Update:

Yesterday's Ranking for health EMD keyword: Unranked
Today's Ranking for health EMD keyword: 16 !!!!!

I have no idea how this is or if it is just the honeymoon stage as my website is just 1 month old and just started SEO on it 2-3 days ago or if its this new update from big G but I hope it stays :p !!

I will say my on-site seo is perfect and my content is all written by me and very well written. But then again I feel like this is a fluke...

Will you reveal your competition data like monthly exact match searches?

1,300 local searches a month. Its a health keyword + word.

health keyword = 165,000 local searches
healthkeyword + word = 1,300 local searches - my emd

Site jumped up to 12 2 days ago and is now sitting pretty ranked 10, checked on a few computers and rank tracker. Big G update taking more into effect of content and design or just honeymoon? hmmm excited to see if this holds

try to choose some longer tail keywords. It will be very hard do beat WebMD on some of the head matches, but if you have a lot of great content you should be able to gain positions for some of the keywords with less search volume.

My experience is the same as some other posters - better find that golden longtail in order to beat WebMD and the others; I have some I've been beating my head against the wall on for a while, and while #3-#10 is doable, #1 s awfully, awfully, awfully tough. (Put another awfully in there, too.)
