Wikipedia is on #1 for wikipedia.org/my_keywords, but the .info EMD is available. If I stick to a good strategy, how hard is it to win from wikipedia?

I have outranked them several times without much issue. They are always a little tougher when they are optimized for what you are targetting. You can always use TT or MS to check the competition of your specific keywords.

Traffic Travis tells me dominating for the search term will be difficult. Could someone maybe tell me if it's really that hard? 'common law marriage' exact .info available. I will be doing extensive diverse link building.

    Home Page:
Wikipedia as the upper hand in informational keywords/terms but not for the most of product based keywords where a shopping/review site will overtake wikipedia page.

It'll be very hard but not impossible. Likely it'll take time and a very good link network to your site. Give it a go and see - it'll be a good challenge and learning experience for future scenarios! Be interested to hear how you get on.

Isn't common law marriage a specific case where people literally do not have to take any action whatsoever? Or was that just an example?

I have no clue what it is about, except that people can read a piece of information and click adsense with a good cpc. It has 8k local searches per month. And I can make some variations on the keyword that get good searches.

I believe it depends on the relevancy of your site regarding the keyword, because I outranked wikipedia easily with a few backlinks, but it didn't had the exact keyword I was targeting.

TT doesn't really seem to be good at rating keyword difficulty (one I checked had Wikipedia and few other "authority sites" listed, including the top one showing sitelinks and its Google + page, but rated ranking for it as a "relatively easily"). In this case, Wikipedia will be an appropriate site for that search term (as it's "informational").

Recently read this, but haven't tried it. Bare in mind it's old, but still interesting. However, I wouldn't want to sabotage a Wikipedia page or condone it (it's not all about that though). I'm sure there are probably other ways covered on BHW.

    Good luck!

Some pages are pretty static and never get updated, those can be outranked easier. Just need the same old same old: older site, - steady quality in bound links increasing month by month, social signals, fresh, quality, relevant, on page content. blah blah blah

outranking wikipedia for an informative keyword like common law marriage will be hard. BUT you can still make money at #2 =]

How I know: I rank #2 for a chemistry term.
