    Hi,

I want to rank top 10 for <keyword> cityname, but the top 10 are all yelp, superpages, insiderpages etc. Is it harder to outrank these than a non-directory site?

    Thanks

it depends rank for what, you can choose long tail keywords and rank for them but the typical 1-2 word words that those web sites are known for is gonna be harder

the reason they rank so well is because of their authority. if you get more backlinks than they, leading to SEO optimized content rich pages and you continue to outgrow them via backlinks you will be successful in time.

I agree. Start with long tail and have the 1-2 keywords as your long term target.

Just make sure that your shorter terms are some way mixed in with your anchor text and that your site is optimized for them.

Why not build Backlinks to what you want to see local thru the directories, most allow you to link.

Ok thanks, if I understand correctly I should target "blue widget store <cityname>" instead of "widgets <cityname>"?
    Doing that too thanks.

You can out rank them very easy. For new domains get 15-20 Quality links a day and slowly scale it up. Im taking Do follow links .edu links(they seem to work) And make all these links a feed then ping it and make sure they all get crawled. I can get a website to the Top spot (Above google maps and directory listings very quickly) Also keep the content fresh at least every 2 days. Just my 2 cents.

    Interesting:
I just tested G to see if there is one site that looks odd on the 1st result page:

Tried the following search string in Google.com, and got newly created .info sites (of all extensions) fighting and beating those heavyweights!!! There are actually 3 different .info sites on that first search result page! All are new, and 2 of those have no sites (referring domains) recommending them!! Have no backlinks either (the 3rd has only one backlink)!!! No keyword in title/URL/description/headerTag!!!!

Jackson Heights, Queens (NY) isn't a tiny/small town either! It's the suburb/borough of NY, USA... I know how big it is (I had lived there), and I know how important plumbers are for the citizen there!:)
    So the result surprises me!

May be studying those sites and their SEO strategies(!) will answer some of your doubts...

    Search string:
    plumber in jackson heights, queens

    HTH

I had always thought that .info sites were of little SEO importance... :)

I am now looking into what makes those sites click!

Get your business also listed in those directories and get reviews .. More positive reviews about your website will get your listing ranked.

    Continuing from my earlier post:

    Got the answer:

Someone is beating G-Algo and MCutts yet again...

Sorry, but all those results unfolded by sheer chance. This finding should interest you BH guys, so study those sites and then dig gold. If Mods think that my findings in these 2 posts are 'inappropriate' then these posts can be deleted...

Do in-depth study on those sites.
