I'm currently targeting a keyword with fairly low first page competition . The current number one spot is held by cosmopolitan with one single article about my niche .
The page of the article itself has some 100 + backlinks , so not an awful lot . in my 2 previous experiences building niche sites i didn't encounter this type of sites , so i'm a bit worried about the domain authority and whether investing in SEO could end up going to waste since a niche site will always be behind a mainstream outlet ...
Does anyone have experience beating these sites , and what kind of strategy would be necessary to do so ?

    Thanks .

Outranking it with white hat SEO might be difficult for a while if your site is not very authoratitive. 100+ backlinks might not sound like a lot, but natural relevant backlinks and with the authority that a site like that has you will have a hard time.

You will need to go black/grey hat if you really want that number one spot. Which will probably involve a PBN.

Best way to beat this page is optimizing your authority and TF which is clearly can be done using a privately held blog network. As you want to beat a mainstream site , you can play on count of backlinks you purchase or create with such networks. My advice is to try different sellers who provide service in your niche. This will definitely give a boost to your site and chances of beating the competition is pretty higher.

Your best bet is to produce a high quality project and get it placed in a mainstream outlet yourself. I actually specialize in this. If one outlet is all you have to beat that would be fairly easy.

You can out rank and big site if the the page does not have many links.

I out ranked a pretty big site and the on page SEO was fairly good but it didnt have links to the page.

This will take time and good links but its possible.

If the page does not have links and the on page seo is weak you can beat it forsure

Sometimes with articles they drop in rankings with age. If the article will become stale with time then its CTR will eventually fall and so will its ranking... if its evergreen you will to figure out the factor measurements that appear to matter and outscore it. For the factors you can't compete on you will have to overcompensate in other areas to have and chance at unseating the article.
