Is it almost impossible to beat an authority domain which is taking #1 on both of my keywords? The domain I'm talking about is about.com, I tried searching BHW for relevant answers and most of them are about trying to beat wikipedia.com, but some say it's impossible to do so.

So, is it impossible to beat an authority domain like about.com to overtake #1 on Google?
    Thanks.

It's possible, but difficulty depends on the keyword.

It's usually not super hard, unless it's your exact term. It often signifies that it's a fairly low competition niche, actually (though you'll find some examples which contradict this).

Not enough information to give an answer.

    Competition analysis
    Keyword stats
Comparible domin stats (age, content, current backlink profile)

Youtube videos might help - but probably won't. If the term is not overtly "AV" in nature, then Google rarely puts a Youtube video at number one no matter how hard you promote it.
Aso - it's Youtube's video that will be ranking NOT your own website. Yeah you can monetize and redirect from Youtube but in some niches that gives pi$$ poor results compared with a real website.

If it's a nickel and dime adsense niche and you don't care that you don't own the site you are spending all your time promoting - then YT is a real option.
If you want to use a third party affiliate scheme and use the YT video to redirect to another website - then the drop out during the extra level of abstraction that that adds will mean the results will not be as good as they could be.

Also - my main point - you are spending time promoting someone elses site (YT) hard. If it's a big niche and you want control of content and ability to edit and tweak - then your own site is normally better.

But without knowing the metrics of your site, your keyword and your competition NO-ONE can give you a decent answer to this question (and if anyone claims they can with this level of info you've given - they are bullshitting)

It depends whether you are competing with authority site's subpage or homepage. You can beat subpage, but it is much harder to outrank authority site's homepage.

Look at Amazon for example. You can outrank amazon for a keyword about one product that they are selling on one of their (many) subpages, but you will have much much harder time outranking them for the keyword "amazon.com".

Okay, here's some more information you guys requested.

I'm trying to rank a YouTube video, it's completely optimized for the keyword I'm targeting. (has keyword in title, description, tags, etc) Currently shuffling on rank #2 & #3.

#1 is an authority domain's (about.com) page, an article to be exact, it isn't ranking #1 because of the backlinks (only like 30-40 with anchors not related to my keyword) but rather because of the domain authority. Here are some stats from Traffic Travis:

If you need more information, please let me know! Thanks for your help!

Pages from big authority website are favoured by G in recent algo update. In my niche, webMD, Amazon, wikipedia ... taking top spots.

about.com has been around for a long time, so they have years of SEO on you, and popularity with information consumers, betting them would take a long time and my never work.

    Scan ranking factors in deep.
Try to get links from websites from where that about.com url is having a link.
It can be difficult to get a link from there. not impossible.

its really a tough game to get #1 beating about.com But its not impossible to beat them. I would suggest you get niche related links from top authority sites in your niche....and it should do the trick for you.

The about.com page in question only has like 90 backlinks, whereas half of them are from another about.com website (allexperts). The anchor text on those backlinks aren't even the same as the keyword of mine. :(

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

Personally, I do not bother about authority domain for my campaigns. Keywords are the most important thing. If you are competing for the same keyword with the authority domain, analyse the domain in terms of meta, description and H1 on that keyword. Take advantage of where it is lacking and apply it to your campaign. You will come out on top. Good luck

:) I remember few months back when I thought about all the SEO "rules" people are trying to keep up with. All mighty Matt Cutts advice etc. - its all crap, maybe not all of it but most of the things people r doing wrong with SEO. My sites are all above webmd, wikipedia etc. All is possilbe but start to think outside of the box ;)
