I have been reading an article by Jacob King addressing something that has been commented in this forum before: how Google provides special care to some big companies that are investing shitloads in Adwords. Of course, this also applies to that companies where Google is investing on via Google Ventures (gv.com/portfolio/) or Google Capital (googlecapital.com/#/companies).

The guy pulls out some interesting data like many of those companies having spammy link profiles or how they automagically recover from manual actions in a few days.

Not new, but it's an interesting reading to refresh some common beliefs:

Well they sure set themselves up pretty nicely. Since they work with these companies, I am sure Google provides them with at least some kind of guidance on how to improve their search presence.

I just can't wait for Google to back one of my projects :p

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA

I needed this today. Can't. Stop. Laughing.

Also....can you blame Google?? If I was Google I would put everything I had an interest in on top as well. It's their search engine...they can do whatever they want....

No offense but I don't really buy it. The Adwords spending bump is likely based on higher CTR for search terms. If Google Ventures/Capital invests in your startup, you don't need favoritism from Google's algo. You have a ton of money to hire SEO people and you already have legitimate awareness and press.

That said, if you get in trouble with Google I am sure the Ventures or Capital team can help you out.

I do agree that their is favoritism going on with the search terms, but without much money some of the highest traffic sites aren't actually Google Favorites. Reddit, Facebook, popular news sites all have authority because they new how to get the affiliates to promote the content. Thus playing by Google's rules you need to spend billions of dollars on ads to generate a viral effect yourself. They tend to dislike black hat because its mostly hype and fake viral effects in order to cheat the system. Its a wealth and popularity game with Google, those that do play make the cash though.

Well, truth or not he bases his finding on Semrush data. Just because he only sees $2.8 million in spend means nothing. Sometimes it comes as close as 50% of actual spend , other times it is just like 10%...
Actual example is one account supposedly spends "only $180k"" yet I know it is more like $900k... so a measly 20% of actual spend.. So he just makes projections with data he pulls from some 3rd party. So take it as you want, but for everybody that has own domains running check and I am sure you will find that it varies greatly what SEMrush shows.

LOL. This one is more successful, he has a stable full of bitches:

Interesting thoughts fellows. I'm kind of convinced about Google favouring the big ones but that's just my opinion. Anyway that's pretty normal as netmoney said, every company fights for their interests although this one should moderate and not cross certain lines to avoid getting in troubles with courts and all that.

Also I think that they favour the big ones not only because of money but because of marketing too. When they hit a big site with a manual action they are sending a message to the industry. Everyone is paying attention so the most minor change will get the penalty lifted and the lesson is learned.
