I want to learn how people get in the top few positions for very competitive terms like say something similar to "weight loss." Looking at a site like this I see they are only PR3, and Yahoo shows 13,000 back links to the main URL and 96,000 total to their site, mostly comments, profiles, etc.

The domain is two and half years old. How fast can you safely make 100,000 back links and not be flagged?

Spend a lot of money.....To get to the top of the weight loss niche is going to take a lot of time, money, and patience. You probably need to tackle some easier niches first before you go for such a competitive niche. If you already have some sites producing good money then start the weight loss site targeting some long tails at first. As you get them on the first page add some tougher ones. After you have a nice base of supporting keywords and links start to go after your main target.

What you need to do is figure out how many links you can build or buy a day and then do it. Keep the number fairly steady and then week in and week out just keep building. The number is not as important as the consistency. Keep in mind you are going to have to build a lot more than 100k links to get that many indexed.

Also it is not just a numbers game, the type and strength of the links come into play as well.

    Good luck.

Back links are not just a numbers game. You can analyze your competitors all you want but you might never be able to over take them just by beating the amount of back links that they have.

Some of their back links might have a lot of back links which would make them really strong. Go for as much diversity as you can while back linking and also send good back links to your back links....it will give you good results.
