Let's assume you're not going to get any links from CNN or Microsoft.com, so big authority sites are out.

And you don't want to do spammy blog comment/forum profile type of stuff because you're white hat, or because it's been devalued after Panda, or for whatever reason.

Then there are private networks, but say you don't trust those because you've been fucked over before by people taking them down/selling them/whatever.

So that leaves linkwheel type stuff and article marketing. Am I forgetting any other strategies?

Using only linkwheels and articles, how much of a chance do you stand at ranking? Assume time/money is no issue and you can build the linkwheels as big as you want.

Can you be competitive in an average keyword using only linkwheel type backlinks?

May I dare say "it depends on the competition" :p We continue to see varying results across various niches with varying competition.

But to add to your list, you may have ignored Social Media Optimization. It's worth your time and money.

Definitely. Use massively mixed up structures if possible. The pyramid 'shape' is best, but make sure it's hickledy-pickledy and not geometrically perfect!

Twitter and FaceBook are more important than ever in building your website's brand in Google's eyes. Using blogs to create original RSS feeds (containing links back to your sites) that autopost to FaceBook pages and twitter accounts is very useful in keeping a site 'busy' for the spider, and this is good from your Google ranking perspective.

Pretend I'm a complete noob for a second and tell me what that means.

Do you mean creating Facebook and Twitter accounts for your site?

I would presume he means optimising your sites to receive Social Media juice.. yes... Twitter, FaceBook, YouTube and other social forums. They tend to be very high PR/Authority and have highly active communities and posting - keeping the spider busy on your site.

Oh geez, I hate all those shitty Facebook accounts that were created to promote shitty IM sites. Is it really that big of a help?
