I have been getting tons of emails and newsletter about high PR web directories - from PR3 to PR6 (on the actual listed page).

I am wondering how effective are web directories nowadays? Are they worth it?

It depends. A new unique referring domain from a solid PR site would always help. However, look at their directories first and how spammed they are before paying anything for it.

The ones I have my eyes on arent that spam, at least not in the category I am planning to submit my site on.

However, I also read about how Google is not giving these type of sites/links too much value as they are more focused on 'contextual links' nowadays.

They are still worth in terms of diversity. It's hard to picture out what you mean or what sites you refer to since there are no links. Also, is it in the same niche as yours? Could you show it to us?
