I see more and more pages (local) that I want to rank sites for that have Google places as the first result and then the Google map to the right hand side. Are these easy to outrank or are Google keeping these spots to themselves?

    Thanks

If there are Google places listing available in SERPs for your keyword, then chances are you, too, can get into GP. Give it a shot.

The answer is it depends. Google can place their results for anything anywhere they want. If they've positioned their results for a particular serp in position 1 through 3 in the sidebar as an example... you can't outrank them no matter what you do. All you can do is rank at the top of what follows their results.
