Lets say you are doing your keyword reaserch and want to determine the competition level. The first spot in google is amazon, wikipedia, .gov website or the "brandname".com

What's your experince - how much effort does it take, to get the no. 1 position in google?

1: Easy (basic onsite SEO and a few good links)
2: Fairly easy (basic SEO and less than 100 good links)
3: Medium (it's duable within 4 month with a lot of BL)
4: Difficult (Takes a lot of hard work. Timeframe = more than 6 month)
5: Very difficult (forget it - waste of time)

    Scenario A:
    Amazon.com/"sub-url"
Keyword is in title and in a H1 tag
The specific page has less than 100 direct links to subpage

    Scenario B:
    wikipedia/"sub url"
Keyword is in title and in a H1 tag
The specific page has less than 100 direct links to subpage

    Scenario C:
    A .gov domain /sub url"
Keyword is in title and in a H1 tag
The specific page has less than 100 direct links to subpage

    Scenario D:
    "brandname".com/"sub url"
Keyword is in title and in a H1 tag
The specific page has less than 100 direct links to subpage

Please let someone have some insights on this. I'm getting owned by Amazon on about 3 sites where they have the top 2 spots and I'm stuck in 3rd. They don't have their on-page factors straight either.

A small "bump" in the hope that someone might have some experience with competition :)

It would honestly depend on so many factors that this question can't be honestly answered. All factors need to be considered when trying to outrank the big dogs.

Amazon should be fairly easy. Wikipedia, not so much. On the bright side however, you rarely need to outrank Wikipedia for commercial terms, people who are looking to buy something simply won't click the Wikipedia links.

I think it depends. If the page you're looking to beat has few backlinks and poor onsite optimization, my guess is its 2-3.

As the previous posters stated, it depends on a lot of factors but it is possible. Not easy, but don't consider it as a waste of time, think of it more like a challenge!

still no one answered the question. I am interested in any advice / case study.we all not it depends on a lot of factors but lets make this
    - 1 website keyword.com
    - indexed for the keyword pos 67
    - Rss submited the website, bookmaking main page, one link wheel (20 properties) with somme sb comments as help to get value
    - High profile to main (400 pr 2-8)
    - 30 edus

    Keyword
    exact match 5k/month
    "keyword" = 150,000
    top 2 is amazon link

is it possible or not ? Hope I answered most of your factors.

Unfortunately I don't think your going to get the answer you're looking for, none of use really know what Big G's equation is, all anyone can do is give you a few generalities, based on experience as to what works most of the time. But even then what works once won't work every time.

Trust me if anyone does have the big equation, they are storming the internet for every money keyword they can,...

via my observation, amazon usually right below manufacturer's page. very rare site can outrank amazon, so its pretty impressive when i came across. case 1: amazon outranked by another authority site like target with 200 blog network articles link. case 2: emd with 10 web2 linkwheel outrank amazon awhile and 3 month later varnished from serp. bottom line is amazon beatable yet very tough

My own 2 months old site outranked Amazon... not so difficult!

Also I think it's the same with Wikipedia.
