How easy, or hard, is it to rank for a keyword that search results 3-6 are news sites like cnn, fox etc but a subdomain of the main site. Like cnn.com/weather (not going for that just using as an example) I would also be ranking a subdomain with the same niche so it would be mysite.com/weather.

My site is about a month old

First of all subdomain would be weather.mysite.com not mysite.com/weather. Everything is possible but according the info you provided it`s impossible to analyze the competition.

    Cheers

Sorry meant inner page. I can analyze the competition myself I just want to know if news sites have some kind of special authority when it comes to ranking.

It's hard when you're dealing with large and well established sites.

It's not impossible but it would be very, very tough. You'd basically need to "Brand" yourself and your site, then be in it for the long haul.

Read Brian Dean's great post on being a brand, Step #2: http://backlinko.com/google-trustrank
