So the other day Instagram released a windows-based version of their platform, which is really handy. I went ahead and created an account, no proxy or anything, using a personal sim card, and when I went I logged in, I was presented with a list of suggestions, as to who I should follow. So far all I had entered was my email, phone, and username, yet Instagram still suggested that I follow some people that I already know, from the local area. At first, I thought they made these suggestions based on your IP address, however, some of the accounts live around 5 miles from me, and others 20 ish. So my question to you guys is: How did Instagram associate me with these people? This isn't exactly a personal account, so I manually un-ticked "Include your account when recommending similar accounts people might want to follow" What do you think?
