Check his top page. You will be able to find out how he achieved it. Most probably some page of his website got ranked into a low competitive and high traffic keyword with some good secondary keywords.

Sometimes a different domain that was doing well was redirected. Like someone said, check their top page and keywords you'd have an idea.
