To be honest I've never really come across anyone that would be able to type using all of their fingers. At least I haven't noticed. I personally use the index fingers the most though I do use some of the other fingers including the thumbs, but the index finger is like the main path finder. Come to think of it the the three fingers on the inside of the hand are the main ones I use. The outer two are usually for like the additional bits and pieces on the keyboard. I hardly ever use the small fingers unless it is for something like the enter button. I can also type without really looking at the keyboard, it's like the keyboard layout is in my head and I just know which buttons to click.

I was just wondering whether there is a better way of typing then the one I've become used to. Not that it's bad but I was wondering if people can actually use all of their fingers consistently for all keys. I've tried doing so now but I just find it kind of weird, my fingers get lost and confused. It's like being right handed all your life and then trying to write something with your left hand.

I just found a keyboard layout which is apprently meant to explain how to use all your fingers. I don't know if I'm just used to the way I type or what but I don't find such a layout practical, not because it doesn't make sense but because then my fingers are cramped together too close and I can't seem to maneuver the keyboard properly. Not only that but each finger is of different length which makes me move my hand anyway.

I remember, 6 years ago I really wanted to get my hands on one of these...

    [IMG] [IMG]

I never got my hands on one of them, but now that I remember that this thing exists, after all these years... I'm gonna buy one. Back then it was a prototype, but I'm sure it's been perfected by now.

Did you not have typing class? That conditioned me to type like that pretty strongly and its fast, I would've though most people type like that because of all the practice on form they made us do. I use all of my fingers but not my right pinky much as it was broken and still doesn't bend well. I def use my left pinky though. Because of this my left hand stays in place but my right hovers a little and moves around, I still type VERY fast though :)

Nope, never even heard of typing class. Learned to type just by using the keyboard. Never even thought of looking for a guide to type. lol

The way I type I can manage:

Most people use all of there fingers, and I do as well.

Although as I'm typing this I find myself only really using the first two and my thumbs for the overwhelming majority of the typing. But I still use all of my fingers. To be honest it's a matter of muscle memory, and everyone is different.

If you're trying to increase your words per minute, give it time and practice. Ten years ago I couldn't type nearly as fast I type now. Maybe 30 wpm? Now I'm at 70+. I just fly on the keyboard now compared to a long time ago, and just because I've been typing so much for so long on so many different machines.

Damn bro how old are ya! I'm old enough where we had the old school Mac's with the full big sized floppy and the green/brown screen (not in the class, about 10 - 15 computers in the computer lab for the school) and we had typing class like 1 hour a week every year. Got ya used to it!

We're about the same so I guess its just what your muscle memory is used to, with enough practice you probably get pretty close to just as fast in any position (except poking 1 at a time and starting at your keyboard):

Although I'll say about 10 seconds of that was me misspelling a word and being too dumb to figure out to delete and redo it properly. I could do better but then I'd be typing all night trying to show off instead of working and doing the dishes ;)

Hmmm..Not sure if this thread was opened out of sincerity or just to brag about typing speed..

Lol, I just tried the test and I got up to 77 w/ 0 errors. Good job.

I learned typing on manual typewriters. If we got caught peaking at the keys they made us change desks to the typewriters that had all blank keys. Matter of fact this POS keyboard I'm typing on how has over half the keys blank. I wore off the letters I guess.

Well at least computers don't have manual carriage returns and no bell when you reach the end of the line. I can still hear all 30 manual typewriters hammering keys with all of us racing to the bell at the end of the line telling us to return the carriage for a new row.
