How do you see Wikipedia link

Here is my take.
Since it is a nofollow link. It only passes context but strong context.
A do follow link passes both context and SE authority.
So high authority nofollow links makes it easy to rank with relatively non relevant do follow links like your different niche website.
It can be made relevant by making nofollow link with relevant content to these sites.

During your research work there is lot that you could not use. You can edit those Wikipedia articles and build your account while also getting links to suitable content on your site.

For me I have some experience and friend who gives me them all the time it will not really give you a ranking boost directly but for branding purposes, it's kind of cool but you can use it for traffic source some of the time for example if you run a computer repair firm for example you have a wikipedia for say Computer repair in a local area you could get like 2000 extra month traffic or so.

I have read different case studies where nofollow links affect rankings.

They kind of do and don't in some ways depending on different factors often.
 
It's easy to get wikipedia links, making them stay takes a bit more creativity and work (and an aged account helps too).

The value is that a number of sites syndicate populate articles, so if you can get your link placed in a good high traffic article - you could get backlinks on other sites as websites scrape wiki articles for content.

It's not a solid strategy for backlinks mind you & Wiki moderators are worse than reddit moderators - it's really pedantic people who get super anal about what links are pointing to where and who placed it.

Yes that may happen if one start selling links from the account.

The main form of a URL to a Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_name (used in wikilinks, recommended when a URL has to be given) An alternative form: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Page_name (allows more options by appending parameters to the URL, not indexed by search engines)

Actually it may be easier then you think... I usually try to find an existing article on the topic I would like to link to, but in a different language.
If it doesn't have a version in the language of my website, then I translate or write another article in the desired language.
I usually copy the same sources / links from the original version + I add some local urls + I add my own link :)

Never just try to add a link to an existing article and expect it to stay... Because it won't.

This is because usually it is commercial link. One can also find dead links and add or create a better source. Or point to your site by adding original source from archive.org and citing the source.
 
I have seen a site rank exclusively with nofollow links from high authority sites. It's surprising to see how a lot of people think that they are useless. The nofollow links from low-authority sites (typically blog/wordpress comments), won't pass any value. But they pass authority and trust if built from some sites.

Yes some call it authority I call it context !! Priority Wikipedia or media sites SM Rediit Forums comments Common SM sites.
 
nofollow links do not carry as much link juice and authority as they used to be,
the case study you provided was created back in 2015 and many things have changed since then including the nofollow links power (i believe the change did happen back in May 2020 update)
Today, it's simply not worth it relying on or investing in these links for ranking, maybe they would work to give some trust, branding and similar stuff

If it rely only on do follow link it will be more slow considering resource wise.
