    Hi
when someone calls and says "another place is cheaper" I have the urge to tell them "well, if they are cheaper, then go to them. bye" and hang up. I really really want to do this, but it's kind of rude. so how do you respond to someone that says "everybody else is charging less"

I really want to say this. But it would not be good for business. I am trying to find a professional and convincing way of responding. Like "then go to them" but something that is not rude.

Come on now. That's a terrible way to respond. When someone sees price as an issue you need to continually "add value" to your product or service. If you're charging $399 and everyone else is charging $199, tell them about all the added extras they are getting and all about your incredible unmatched customer service. Continue to talk up your service until you have added so much value that it is worth it to them to pay $200 more for all the extra benefits you have to offer.

    "We offer things they don't"

don't waste your time with clients who try to nickel and dime you - in the long run you will lose out with them anyway.

You get what you pay for. Yes they might be cheaper, but they do not provide a service as quality as ours.

Just say to them if money is the over riding factor for you then try them out, if it doesn't work, come back to me.

But bare in mind that money is not the only factor, we price out service based on how much value we are able to offer out clients, if they are cheaper perhaps they're not as good... Etc.

"What does your wife have to do with our conversation?" j/k

You don't need to get stressed with it. You know your profit margins and what you 're willing to go for. The prospect is doing his job trying to minimize his expenses while getting the same thing. Nothing wrong with it. If your services are really better than the competition, you have nothing to fear in the long term. You don't want everyone as a customer.

Perhaps someone in a less developed country can perform the same job at a much cheaper rate. Many people have lost jobs and contracts because of overseas outsourcing in recent years. Maybe it's time to look for something that can't be outsourced.....

As a lot of people mentioned just go with the 'You get what you pay for' and then possibly explain how others use automated methods that aren't as good. This may not be true but you can just tell them that!

Used to get this a lot when I had my computer business many moons ago. PC World moved into the area and all I got was 'PC World can do that cheaper'.

I just polity said thats fine - if you want to save money then I am not going to drop my price. My support will be better than theirs and you have my phone number.

Weeks later I would have them coming to me asking if I would have a quick look at their machines as something wasn't quite right. Depending on how much of an asshole I was feeling that day I either put my rates up to PC World levels or said I wouldn't want to void your warranty, you are better off taking it back to PC World.

It worked, next upgrade they wanted they came back home :D

The saying 'the grass is always greener' is never truer than it is today. With the governments of most countries fucking up big time people are trying to save a few bucks. However, I would prefer to pay slightly higher prices once to have peace of mind rather than paying twice for the same thing. Some people just don't get that bit!

"You are more than welcome to choose whoever you want, but I would also like to point out that I offer a high level of customer service that more than makes up for the higher price. I'm not sure what the quality level of my competitors' customer service is, but I can assure you that ours is just as good, if not better."

When people say to you "but someone else is cheaper" they still want to buy your service, they just want you to justify the extra expense. Here is your opening to explain in detail why the service you are offering is a rock solid investment for them and their company. You wont do this by bad mouthing the competiton this will instantly isolate you as someone who makes excuses. A customer asking you to justify your price is a solid gold sales lead. There is something much worse than people questioning your price....When you are politely thanked for your pitch but get no feedback at all thats the worst you will ever get from a customer.

Well there's always the possibility that your competitor is just as good as you, and you are overcharging based on what you provide, given your anticipated response from them is "the other place is giving me exactly what you just told me." Then maybe it's you who needs to work on improving your product so that it's worth the price you charge, if someone else can do the exact same thing at half the cost.

If someone told that to me I 'd go shop elsewhere. The second sentence contradicts the first one and so clearly one is a lie.
