Here is a search, there are four results above the local results: how is this done?

I do not think you understand what you are seeing.

The first 3 are ads,

The next 4 are the organic local results,

the part under that is the maps 7 box.

Powerful internal and external link building can get you higher rankings. Google obviously trusts those domains for local results for now.

I mean the local maps results.

I see those at the top for some searches, and I see other results above them on different searches. I want to know how to get a site to rank above those results.

Rank your site into spot 1, 2, 3 or 4, those are organic results.

Are you asking how to do local SEO?

Hey turdface, just told you how.

Those SERPs are actually not considered "local SEO"

I posted a screen shot of the webpage but something is amiss somewhere. In the preview the screen shot appeared fine. But when it got posted the garble mess appeared. I tried in vain to edit the post but the edit function is not working.

A mod need to step in here and fix what appears to be a system problem. If anyone knows how to alert a mod please lend a hand.

Oh and by the way, the example I was trying to show is the serp results for the keyword "dentist chicago".

Try saving the image to imgur.com and posting it that way... good chance that is the issue.

Let me rephrase the question since apparently it is still not clear.

In some searches for local keywords, the Google Maps results appear at the top. In other searches, there are results above the Google maps results. How do you get results to appear above the google maps? In other words, how can a site without a physical location outrank the ones that do have offices?

One way I use to begin ranking a business for local is by getting them noticed in the obvious places. Yelp, Google+, etc.... Then you do directory submissions and maps citations. make sure their business is verified with Google and they have a business page (which they should be if they're a business, most dentists do). Just gave you some gold. Up to you to do the research. :)

LOL ranking above YELP is about the easiest thing you can do. Yelp ='s No competition at all!

True. I am surprised to see that kind of competition for this KW.

Sorry for highjacking your thread, but is it actually possible to rank a site for a local KW just with content and backlinks, but with out having citations? Just for clarification: of course I dont plan to use it on a clients site.

If it is not possible, can you use the same post office box for different citations, so that you just have 1 box and use it for various e.g. Yelp citations of different sites?
