Guys... we are all sitting in front of computer A LOT of hours. I'm 10-15 hours on my computer and working but just making breaks when I have to eat (I know this is not recommended but I'm really absorbed by the work...)

How do you protect your eyes and health?

Let's share some tricks to help our body to resist at this effort.

Thanks

sorry for my bad english.

I wear contacts, and I'd figure that would increase the strain on my eyes, but actually, I very rarely find my eyes irritated.

The only "health" problem I find myself having from sitting behind the computer for so long is lower back problems..it's not really "pain", it's just irritation, where I feel uncomfortable. Still trying to find a solution.

For every hour staring at the computer like
we all do, take a 15 minute break don't look
at your phone or anything such as a computer screen.

Your eyes will come back to haunt you if you don't give them breaks. Exercise regularly $ eat healthy to rid of back pains, chest pains, and fatigue. You may think your not unhealthy but any pains or such proves you are! Get, and stay in good physical shape and you'll FEEL the difference!!

I personally take a 10-15 minute break every hour of being in front of the computer, and also occasionally gently massage my eyes. It really helps!

Another user posted today a new thread about a little program I have been using for almost two years. It's called F.lux.
Code:
http://stereopsis.com/flux/
It changes the colour temperature of your screen automatically depending on your location so after the sun goes down, the screen changes color and becomes a bit more red. This is really relaxing for your eyes and you tend to sleep easier afterwards. It's great for late work!

Another full day in front of computer. Lol... my eyes feels irritated and tired

First: I work out at least 4 times/ week for my personal health
2nd: Take breaks of 5-10 mins every hour.
3. Get a decent monitor.

Whenever I find my eyes getting weak, tired, stressed, or stiff, I occasionally do a quick round of eye exercises/rotations which usually makes them less tense and helps to relax them a bit. Search "PVS tutorial 1" on youtube for a great demonstration of this. The video you'll get suggests doing 10 clockwise and 10 counter clockwise, but that might be overkill... usually just 2 or 3 rotations is a big help

If you're near sighted, and don't need your lenses to see what's on your screen, ditching your glasses or contacts while working might be a big help. Wearing glasses that are meant to help you see things far away to view something that's a couple feet in front of you can cause over accommodation and stress on your eyes, and maybe (as in my case) even worsen your vision over time.

Something that I've been doing recently that's been a big help is looking at stereograms every so often. Proper viewing of stereograms requires that your eyes are completely relaxed, and because of this I think they're a great way to keep your eyes in check. If I feel my eyes are overstressed, I'll look at a couple stereograms until I'm able to relax my eyes enough to see them properly, then get back to work. If you search google for "eyetricks" you'll find a great website with a ton of them

I also recommended checking out a book called "Relearning to See" by Thomas Quackenbush, and "Power Vision System" by David De Angelis (both with rave reviews on Amazon).

- If you wear glasses, these books help to show you how you can restore your natural sight by practicing proper vision habits and doing certain eye exercises.

- If you don't wear glasses, these books demonstrate some great techniques on how to maintain good vision. "Relearning" to see has some great tips on maintaining your vision and relaxing your eyes.

Also:

Like everyone else says, taking breaks is a big one.

Don't forget to breath!

Staring out of the window for 5-10 minutes always a good one. Look at something far away, keep your mind, body, and eyes totally relaxed.

Similasan makes homeopathic eye drops called 'Computer Eyes' that are suppose to help relieve your eyes from computer strain. People seem to love them. You can find them on Amazon.

Been using this for a while as well, really makes a difference, and takes all of 1 minute to set up from the free download. Everyone should be using this!

What do you recommend after a full day in front of computer to relax your eyes and not feel irritated. Cold water, ice on eyes?!

I take a break every 2.5 hours to eat and I drink water through out the day. I try to stay away from coffee and fast food. Other than that, I do muay thai to take out my frustrations. I also play basketball so both things keep me fit with eating right.

If you don't take a break every 60-90 minutes to relax and unwind, then at least look away from your screen for 5-10 minutes. Focus on something across the room or out the window.

It's the focus that strains your eyes, we're always focusing on these fucking pixels and it's not natural. We're not meant to be straining to see these glowing RGB dots, we're meant to be looking at birds, trees, water..

So do that. Put something in your home that you enjoy looking at, a piece of art, a photo, your kids' drawings.. Then just look at that instead.

It's very important, though. If you do not relax your eyes, they will come back later in life with nothing but hate for you.
