Does anyone know the correct way of making a social site. I have an idea that I think might be big. I want it somewhat similar to Myspace how people can create pages and interact.

What are the steps?

1.) developing a database
2.) developing a website
3.) programming your forms and functionality
4.) making a directory for members to interact with each other
5.) communication tools-> comments, forums, chatrooms, private messages
6.) ability for users to upload media

this list could go on and on depending on what genre you're targeting for your social network site.

Also, your probably going to need a niche, what would make them come to you, as opposed to them?

My idea would definitely attract people. It possibly will attract alot of upperclass as well.

Ok - what you can do and the tools you should use is directly dependent on your technical knowledge of PHP etc. You're going to want to find a mash-up platform.

I looked at Pringo and a couple of others (Dolphin etc.) they look pretty good, but I actually ended up going with ning.

the problem with ning is that functionality and controllability is limited unless you modify the PHP code - which they will let you download.

Agree. I use joomla for all of my sites, I am currently making 2 social sites with it. With Joomla you can basically do one-click installations to include forums, chat rooms, etc. You can see a list of all the things you can add to Joomla in by visiting their website and clicking on extensions. I LOVE JOOMLA

Probably not a long term solution, but Social Site Generator can have you up and running with an almost mirrored version of MSpace. Good foundation to put your concept together, and something to show potential investors or developers.

The software is posted here, and is pretty simple to get goin'. I had it up and running in no time at all. If you have any questions getting the software to fly, feel free to PM me.

just use PHPfox... its the best!!!

n joomla's social networking exptension sucks... i tried it... just use phpfox...
