Just wondering...

I try to use the "Thanks" button whenever I find a posting where I can use the info or there is a link to a download that I use, but I don't see how to give rep to someone (or for that matter, any sort of guidelines as to when a +rep is warranted).

However, I do see that quite a few people say they are giving +rep in addition to thanking someone for posting.

I would think that any sort of posting that shows considerable effort on the part of the poster (i.e. some of the more detailed explanations of specific blackhat/whitehat or moneymaking methods, etc.) would warrant a +rep. Off hand, I can think of at least 20-30 long-time posters (many of them mods) that would rate a +rep for their many contributions (not that they need it, but it is nice to be appreciated).

The only thing that I've seen is a small "scales of justice" icon in the upper right-hand corner of MY OWN posts, next to the permalink/ report post links that say "Add to rep of dhamma_man" (myself). This can't be right!?!

Any clarification would be appreciated.

Many thanks and many, many thanks for BHW!! :)

You should see the little scale next to every post. And I personally use +rep for anything really really special. A good joke, a great post about attitude, a fantastic and original share. Anything that jumps out at me as above and beyond the call.

If you don't see the scales, I don't know what to say other than contact a moderator and see if there's something they can do.

Btw: +rep given for asking. ;)

Hi, scubaslick!

Thanks for the response and the rep (my first!) :D. My problem is that I only can see the "give rep" icon on my own posts, not on any others. (Is this some kind of "trust" exercise, to see if I don't just sit here and hit my own rep button continuously???)(Kidding!)

I e-mailed the webmaster from the link at the bottom of the page, and hopefully a remedy will be supplied.

Thanks again for your assist, and I agree with you re: appropriate situations to give rep. :)

I believe that the rep system does not kick in until you have at least 50 posts, and have been a member for 30 days. Once you meet both requirements, you should see the rep scale on every post.

+rep given for asking as well, because this confused me when I was new.

thanks for explaining those

no wonder i didnt see those scales

i thought it was removed like the thanks button last time.

Ditto that... all the mysteries unfold slowly... a well thought out scheme indeed!

oh wow i have never given rep before, what an idiot. all ive been doing is giving thanks. where can you see someones rep tho? like, you can see how many times theyve been thanked, but you cant see how much rep has been given.

When you look at someone's profile (or look in the member list), you will see, far to the right of their username, you will see the blue dots that are associated with how many posts the user has, and above that, you will see a green rectangular deal, and if you hover over that, you will get a cryptic message reflecting the rep of the person.

It seems that rep is not used all that much here, though, as even HaRRo is only "about to get famous" or something like that. ;)
