Is it possible to discover a competing site's private blog network?
    If so, how?

Do as vincec said, then find One pbn site, check who is, grab the ip, check what is hosted in the ip, people is lazy maybe you will find another site, check the email in the who is, what other domains are registered with that email, try to do the same with all the data from the who is, most people is very lazy so you Will probably find something, dont forget to also do the same process with the pbns you find, a lot pf people build the same backlnks to there pbns.

if you find a pbn you can Also search part of the artices in google, it may lead you to another pbn.

thats for the lazy pbns, if that deos no work they did it very well!! Good luck

Another thing i forgot, your competitor probably has other sites, there are tools that Tell you if someone appears to be owner of other site, also check similar keywords, if you find a site that is ranking, has similar structure, same theme and similar keywords, maybe your competitor owns it, do the same process and probably you will find other pbns to the other site but you did not find it because they have anchors, rinse and repeat!!

This thread another form of negative seo request? Find competitor PBN and report them to G? Otherwise why are you trying to find the network??

Well you can report them, but also I think its a good idea to know how your competition is ranking. If you can find their PBN and see how strong it is, then you know how much you will need to outrank them.

Hit or miss in my experience. Googling their personal email can uncover a lot of stuff...

you can also try grabbing their backlinks, then doing a bulk IP search to see if there are duplicate C-class addresses. a bulk whois search can also help.

It is better to do SEO to your site with your best efforts and leave the competitors to do what they want.

There was a thread about this yesterday or the day before. You would find so much more information if you actually searched the forum before asking.

Look for footprints and use ahrefs to discover backlinks if your competitors did not hide their links correctly.

It is not as easy as that if the link is not using a naked url as the anchor text.

Isn't it part of the research on a competitor? If i wanted to rank higher i would want to try and find out exactly how he/she is ranking, and if its using a PBN or not. Wouldn't you?

The easiest way is probably using ahrefs and checking all the inbound links using the one link per domain filter. Just click through to their top 50 links and you will usually be able to spot their PBNs. As soon as you visit the site you can usually tell that it's a PBN. But they may have blocked ahref's bot on the PBN and the target site. Sounds like a good idea for a piece of software though...
