I just wanted to know the steps that some of the more experienced people in SEO take to figure out whether the keyword they have chosen is easy to rank for or not. Right now I just want to get my feet wet and try to build a small site around a keyword that has 1000-1500 US monthly searches and I need to know how to analyze the 10 websites on the first page.

What do I really look for when trying to figure out whether its easy to rank or not? what are the numbers I'm looking for when looking at the competitors on the first page? (DA, PA)
I looked at TONS of keywords with the above mentioned monthly searches, almost all of them have lower than 20-30 competition on keywordrevealer, yet they're all high competition according to the google keyword tool, I can't for the life of me find a keyword that's not high competition on google's tool even with less than 1000 searches, are they really all high competition regardless of what keywordrevealer is saying?

    Thanks

Google KW tool does not show you the competition/difficulty of a keyword. That competition in GKT is for adword advertisers.

You can know if a KW is easier to rank using tools like keywordrevealer, LTP and other keyword tools. I personally check the number of weak sites in the top 20. The DA/PA as well.

No it doesn't, it means that the competition for ADS on that keyword is high.

I agree with @eelajt, to find low competition on certain keywords just google it and see how many results you get if they are under 1mil. its ok good, then do a backlink competition analysis on the first 10 websites that rank on that specific keyword if they don't have many backlinks from high-quality sources then you can rank on that keyword with a good SEO strategy. You're Wellcome! :D

That is not a dependable method, amount of search results says nothing about keyword competition.

If u want to clear out the competitive keywords in google searches then look for the long tail keywords that will help.
But the ranking for your site delays.

It says how many websites rank on that specific keyword and you find the answer relatively quick

There are several tools to help you figure out how this works. I personally use the Longtail pro and keywordrevealer (free, but limited)

You can also checkout @hekke guidelines.

Yes but a search with 100k results can have a top 10 with high competition and a search with 12 million can have no competition so the information is worthless to you.

LTP and keywordrevealer should give you enough feed on competition. The guide as referred by @hekke is a nice starting point.

All I do is take a glance at the top 10 search results for that keyword. You'll know right off the bat just by looking just how difficult it will be to rank. If I can't tell by glancing, I'll do backlink checks on some of the sites, and give each site a visit. If you have some really weak sites ranking top page, you've got yourself a winner.
