Would you even use them at all? Considering the amount of spam and all? It's always bothered me when starting out a new site because it makes me wonder whether or not the site maybe looks a bit to bare with all the comments being empty.

We use WP Reviewer plug-in that allows us to seed comments we want. And filter out the unbelievable amounts of spam with the WP provided spam filter. YMMV

I guess for me though I'm not too worried about the spam. It's the fact that all of the blog posts have no comments. Does that not look bad to visitors? And isn't it possible that it could also offset your keyword density?

I used Akismet too and it was good for spams.

I usually go to the spam folder (which is often full even for new sites) and un-spam a few comments for each page.

Then I go to edit, change the comment to my liking, if necessary strip out the url and change the name as well.

Now you have comments that YOU want, posted at legit-seeming times and all that ;)

Install captcha plugin, it does wonders. Or just turn comments off.

+1 for this, I used to get a ton of spam on a load of my blogs until I enabled this. Still doesn't stop it all though.
