After I have done keyword research, I will then do competitor analysis and look at the link profiles of the sites that rank well to give me an idea of what type of links I need to build in that niche. While it is better than not doing it, I don't really feel that it is that comprehensive and wondered how others do it and whether there are are useful tools to help.

At the moment, I use MajesticSEO (silver) and download the site links using the site explorer tool. I then look at the anchor text and look through the source URL sites. I do attempt to categories the links but this is very slow work. I also use the clique hunter tool before and during an SEO campaign to see which sites I am missing.

This approach simply gives me an idea of the types of links I need to build and is not very scientific. I don't really feel I am getting the most out of MajesticSEO either. How do others do competitor analysis? Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.
