How do you beat a competitor eventhough you have better on and off page SEO?

    There are competitors with:
    • No keywords in their title tags
    • No links pointing to their page
    • Low number of moderate links pointing to their home page
Our on page is optimized but not overly-optimized. We got 5x more links than them and our links are natural and more relevant than theirs. However, we are still ranking below them.

What am I missing here? Or did I forget to analyze something else?

Have you thought that they may have strong PBNs?

Site and content age? How long have you been ranking below them? It takes a while before you can beat them.

I think you need to analyze his/her site history. Better that will help to know which one helps to rank them before yours.

    Algo? Let's play with you.
Wild guess will be hidden PBN's or domain authority.

What niche is it, pharma, financial as it sounds like they have an excellent hidden PBN behind them and have probably invested a shed load of money.

How good is Ahrefs when it comes to detecting PBNs? Because I checked most of their links are low-quality directory links.

It is coming to 6 months now. Our website is 16 years old and theirs is younger than ours.

It is the printing niche. It isn't as big as pharma or financial so the niche isn't as competitive. But I'm still not sure why we can't outrank them.

Better on page. Better off page. Faster website. Older domain.

This isn't only for 1 competitor. It is for several and we are getting beat out.

The hidden PBN's are hidden from all the backlink crawlers except Google so you can't see it in Ahrefs.

What do the PBNs that can hide themselves from Ahrefs but not from Google? PBNs are generally normal websites after all.

It's as simple as blocking the Ahrefs, Majestic and SEMRush crawlers with robots.txt (or by IP in htaccess if you want to be really aggressive/sure) and allowing Google through. It's a tactic people use so others can't find their PBNs in tools like the aforementioned. It allows Google to find the PBN so they can get credit for the links.

Their links may have FAR more authority than yours and point to some top lucrative sites. Have you thought about that? How much competitor link analysis have you done?

Could be your page speed. Could be mobile usability. Could be the engagement metrics i.e your competitors site's bounce rate is lower than yours - therefore Google sees a signal that their site is more valuable in the eyes of the user. Good luck. PM me if you want me to take a closer look.

To expand on page speed, I suggest using a tool to analyze your page speed and your competitor's. If your competitor's page speed is slower than yours then you can rule out that speed isn't really a factor here.
