Do you use specific tools to determine if you can compete with top sites?

Like what tools do you use to neatly organize the meta tags, etc into 1 report?

    Thanks

Look at their on-site seo (basic) and their backlinks!

Simple... then if it looks good then you can go further.

Look at their page's source code. Or just get seobook's firefox plugin, it's got alot of tools to see the seo on their page(s).

And use backlinkwatch.com to look at their backlinks.

Double that... so far, no need for any thing else. Plus with all of the other modules, almost makes it a 'one-stop-shop'

I do the following for testing the waters, AnnSmarty in SEJ has written quite lot on this

Step 1: Keyword - List 10 Top competing Pages for excat match; SEOs On ->> On-Page, Off-Page stats ( refer MS data )

Step 2: QDF (Query Deserves Freshness) factor: How many (if any) "fresh" results are there in top 10 results? How often do search results change.

Step 3: Page type tendency? Do most pages among top SERPs reflect informational, navigational, or transactional intent?

Step 4: Data representation, UI, Navigational value - from SEO perspective & genre type schemes & color ( customizing it for type of audience )

Definitely Market Samurai... nothing else will give you the same kind of in depth analysis off your competitors websites.
