As a member from 2010 I would've assumed that you at least have read some of the threads on seo.
It depends upon niche, site content (some are highly sharable), some have hundreds of links from 1 domain, etc.
Judging if a site has an unnatural amount of backlinks should be judged with at least 2 criteria:
1. link types (this is the most important)
2. top sites in that niche and how many links and what type of links they have
So, even if your assumption is correct, how the heck can anyone GUESS what links you are looking at and how they are generated?

Fair enough, thank you for the insight.
Just a little frustrated, been manually building high DA backlinks via e-mails.

Take a closer look at the backlinks. The majority of them will most likely be low quality or spam. Any site that gets traffic attracts spam, and if the site is years old these links can really add up.

It's easy to blast links. It's hard to make them HQ links.

super easy to just blast out some random backlinks, focus on high quality backlinks rather than the amount of backlinks

Quality of links is more important than quantity of links. So focus on quality ones

Content is the main thing. If the content is good, google promotes your website.

DA is a third-party metric. Think of it as a rough suggestion at best. I would spend some time reading over current SEO blogs because mass spamming automated crap is years behind the algorithm.
Also, nobody can tell you where your competitor is getting their links without knowing who your competition is. You might be talking about something like Healthline which just has thousands of organically made links.

I think the number of backlinks does not really matter, numbers of domains are more important than links. Because sometimes if you put a link on a top menu or footer, every webpage will count as a page with back link
