I've noticed that a lot of sites seem to have a lot of the types of backlinks that you'd think would have been hurt by penguin... yet they are still going strong.

http://www.legalbuds.com/ for instance I noticed because they were showing up in TBS as a synonym for a lot of VERY random terms (I'm not even spinning anything related to that niche, words like "I've" popped them up). So I looked and while I think a lot of the links look not super HQ they are still doing ok. Why is this? Am I missing something or does google just not pick on some sites? Maybe age of the site?

Possible, but I thought that with Panda and Penguin it was almost impossible to overcome any penelty once they think that you've got bad links. Like people have been having to 301 pages to new addresses because they had so much trouble overcoming the bad links.

It's definitely not impossible to overcome the penguin penalty. If you've got an aged site with good reputation you will be much more resistant to the wrath of the penguin. The above poster is also right - they probably have a ton of high quality backlinks that are doing most of the heavy lifting.

Do you think that it might have something to do with the niche? If everybody in their niche is dirty then maybe the cleanest dirty one seems clean to Google? Do you think thats possible?

What are you using to look up the links? And what do you mean by "Bad" links. What types of links are they?

By junk I just mean they are fairly low quality. You can check links by using tools like semrush. Though you can get good info by using ahrefs like seoreports recommended in his post.

They use extensive SAPE links. Constant cloaking. Constant endless bh spam with a few real links thrown in to mask the BS. I CANT BELIEVE THE ADMINS would allow this live link to plug their site off the good juice of BHW. Maybe they will axe the link. Looks like a paid post. That would be a shame. The company is a scam with a history of bribery and selling poison if you really do the homework.

I have seen something similar in an high competive niche.. they get links from linkdirectories, sape links and then only a handful of high quality links, they rank no. 1 - 4 and are almost impossible to outperfom. Also I have seen sites which have say 100 domains all containing different of their keywords and pointing to the same site.. they rank outstanding good no 1 - 5 all the time.. I'm still analyzing on these sites, but so far I can't figure out what the f... they are doing.

i have seen this alot of time, sites with Chinese anchor text are ranking number 1 but the only thing which i have found common in those sites are first they are aged (5+ years) second they are not EMD's and most of them are .org tld

I think strong brand and age is the main reason for stability positions of this site.

Aged domains have strong backlinks, because in those days sites may have ranked very well too. Aged domains always have more time to penalize because of their past performing.

Linking from poor quality sites may fall down, but did they were built newly?
