I see some sites that rank #1 but yet, they do not have any articles or keywords on the homepage besides meta keywords and such in the source code.

    How do they rank #1?

Or is it just a advantage if you can get articles indexed on a website?

Google "click here" (without quotes). See how adobe ranks first?

    A lot of tuned backlinks.

Also I once heard from ipopbb (a member here) that if you link to pages about a certain keyword, your site can rank for that keyword (although its effect is minimal)

Also, from my experience, nofollow links pass relevance juice, so for example if you had 1000 nofollow links for "red cars" to a blank page, you wouldn't rank highly for "red cars", but you still would rank for it.

Finally, and I haven't verified this, but if you use the keyword within html comments it still ranks it.

    Home Page:
Articles are just a form of content. When google crawls your site, it has to have some word to scan and figure out what you are talking about. One of the easiest and quickest ways to do that is to create articles.

You could really post anything you want on your pages, doesn't have to necessarrily be articles. As long as google is able to crawl it, you are on the right track. Like NTG98 said, links are also another necessary component.

It's all about incoming links! As NTG mentioned, check out how Adobe ranks for 'click here'. There's also been examples of "Google bombs" that made the biography page for George Bush rank for XXXXXX or how if searching for "miserable failure" a while back on Google & Yahoo would show the Whitehouse.gov page for Obama.

Its all about the incoming links, if in abundance and with the right anchor text, it can be deadly.

Just to get it straight, its OK not to have an article on the home page?

Every seo guide begins with writing an article with a certain keyword density. It doesn't always make sense. In most cases visitors dont go to a site to read a 1000 word article.

What do you guys do for your own seo services website for your offline clients to see?

Google's algo does not have the (artificial) intelligence yet to read content that makes proper grammatical sense.

So, write content for the visitor, no the search engines. The type of content will depend on the site and what your objectives are.

My objectives are to keep my homepage dead simple, with a call to action. Not to stuff it with an ocean of words that nobody wants to read except for google. Will I have to build 10X more backlinks because dumbass google cant find an article on my homepage?

If you don't write articles, google wont have a lot of words to rank for.
It's even more the case if your "static" content is not regulary updated.

So, without articles, you'll have to make tons of backlinks cause your competitors surely do the same ;)

    Look at most ecommerce sites.
Google things like luggage, lingerie, cars etc... you likely will not see blogs with articles ranking 1st or maybe not even on page one! Like you said the on page SEO is iffy with the exception of some HTML but the KW density is poor. Its about links back to the site with the KW in it.

As was mentioned earlier ******** or nofollow pretty much tells google what your site is about. The difference is the do follow pushes a little clout back to your site.
