There are botnet ones out there(if I had to guess, Rsocks and other russian based ones). But there are more legitimate networks out there that have other means of getting many, many IP addresses.

Awesome. Ive been making bots in python for a while now to automate pretty much my life, its heaven.
I had assumed some sort of botting was involved, and that most residentual IPs are gained by putting viruses on ppls computers. Could you give me a hint as to if that is correct at all?

There are many options but these are the ones which are most profitable:
1.You provide free vpn via app or a company and get their Residential Ip in return.
2.You make a botnet and spread it massively which is illegal but the most profitable one.

Im not to concerned with selling RIPs, just aquiring them for further botting. So maybe ill try the first option.

one way is by making a free vpn which in return get their ip., the other one is making pirated software injecting malware which connects the system as Residential ip and is in control of person who distributed the malware by software.
There is definitely truth to all above answers and are not false. These techniques are indeed used to trick users and gain their internet access to create proxy IPs without their consent.
But there are reputed companies out there who provide (Software + Hardware) solutions to those users who are willing to use their internet and create residential proxy (using broadband)/mobile proxy (using cellular network) and sell it to earn money from general population.
It is a win-win situation to everyone involved. Companies earn by selling hardware and software, users earn money by selling proxies, and general population gets proxies at better prices.
